JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One run was the difference in both games of University of North Florida softball's Atlantic Sun doubleheader with Lipscomb on Friday with each team winning one game. The Ospreys emerged with a 1-0 Game One win, but was tripped by Lipscomb 5-4 in the second game.
The first game was a defensive battle that included solid pitching from both teams. The only run of Game One came in the first inning when a Mariah Reynolds double brought home Kaley Brosky.
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the win, getting four strikeouts and holding Lipscomb to three hits in 7.0 innings. It was also Wallace's fifth appearance in which she did not allow any runs.
Whitney Kiihnl received the loss after allowing two hits and one unearned run in 6.0 innings. She also struck out five.
UNF's Game One win halted a seven-game skid against the Lady Bison. UNF's last win against Lipscomb was also a 1-0 victory that took place on Mar. 14, 2008.
However, in Game Two, the bats came alive for both teams. Lipscomb jumped out to a 3-0 lead. In the first, Haley Elliott had a two-run double to put the Lady Bison on the scoreboard. Then a bases-loaded single by Kelsey Cartwright in the top of the second drove in another run.
UNF answered with a four-run bottom of the second. Three of the Ospreys' runs were the result of RBI singles. Chie Someya got UNF its first run when she scored on a Marissa Thomas RBI single. Then with two outs, a wild pitch allowed Megan David to score from third and make it a 3-2 game. Brosky's RBI single to left center drove in Jackie Reese for the game-tying run. Brosky then scored the go-ahead run on a Reynolds hit to right center, making it a 4-3 game in favor of UNF.
UNF led Lipscomb for the next two innings. However, the Lady Bison tied the game at 4-4 with a Caroline Mason lead-off home run in the fifth. Gracey Aguirre's one-out triple later in the inning drove home Kristen Sturdivant for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Ashley Brown received the loss. Brown entered the game in the second inning and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs off five hits. She also fanned four batters.
Ashley Anderson had the win after allowing four runs off eight hits in 4.0 innings. Kiihnl was credited with a save when she came in for the final 3.0 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out three.
UNF returns to the field on Saturday when the Ospreys host Belmont in a doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
