JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Atlantic Sun play continues for the University of North Florida softball team this weekend when the Ospreys host two doubleheaders at the UNF Softball Complex. The Ospreys welcome Lipscomb on Friday and then Belmont on Saturday.
UNF will attempt to bounce back from a 3-0 mid-week setback to UCF on Wednesday. Danica Mandarano led the Ospreys with a 2-4 showing from the plate. UNF is currently 1-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference after getting a splitting the series with Stetson on Monday. Since joining the A-Sun in 2006, UNF is an all-time 6-6 in its home-opening conference series.
Lipscomb is one of three teams in the A-Sun with at least 20 wins on the season. The Lady Bison conclude a nine-game road trip this weekend when they come to Jacksonville. Lipscomb went 4-1 at last weekend's Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif., picking up wins over UNLV, host Cal Poly and Ball State. Friday's doubleheader is the start of a conference-opening weekend for the Lady Bison, who visit Jacksonville on Saturday. Lipscomb is one of two teams with an Atlantic Sun-best 25 home runs on the season. Batting leader Kelsey Cartwright has a majority of the Lady Bison's homers with 10. In addition to homers, Cartwright is hitting a team-best .414 and leads Lipscomb in runs (25), hits (36), triples (2), RBI (26), total bases (75), and slugging (.862). Meanwhile, Whitney Kiihnl has a 17-4 record in the pitching circle with a 1.68 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 129.0 innings.
Lipscomb leads the all-time series with UNF 8-4 and swept last year's series in Nashville.
Belmont wraps up a five-game road swing this weekend, but also begins conference play this weekend. Prior to their game at UNF, Belmont takes on Jacksonville in a Friday evening doubleheader. The Bruins have lost their last two and are coming off a 3-1 setback at UT-Martin this season. Becca Gift scored Belmont's only run against UT-Martin, getting to home on an Ashley Hammer double. The playing away from its home field of E.S. Rose Park has not been favorable for Belmont this season. The Bruins are 2-19 in non-home games. Ashley Byers enters the game leading the team in batting average (.344), runs (9), hits (21), home runs (4), RBI (12), total bases (35) and slugging (.574).
UNF holds a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Bruins. The Ospreys and Belmont split last year's series in Nashville with the Bruins taking Game One 1-0 and UNF coming back for a 3-2 eight-inning win in Game Two.
First pitch for Friday's doubleheader against Lipscomb is set for 4 p.m., while Saturday's twinbill against Belmont is scheduled for 1 p.m.
