JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball returns to UNF Softball Complex for the first time in two weeks on Wednesday evening when the Ospreys host UCF in a mid-week single game.
UNF has won nine of its last 10, which includes a doubleheader sweep of Northern Iowa the last time the Ospreys played at home. UNF rallied in both games against Northern Iowa to come away with a 5-4 win in the first game and then a 4-3 eight-inning victory in the second. Those two wins sparked a Division I program record nine-game winning streak.
The Ospreys have a busy week ahead of them with seven games in six days. UNF began the week on Monday with a doubleheader split at Stetson in what was the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams. UNF captured a 1-0 win in the first game when Marissa Thomas blasted a lead-off shot in the fifth inning, but Stetson came back to win Game Two 7-0. Thomas' homer was her second of the season and the eighth for the Ospreys this season. Additionally, five of UNF's eight home runs have been lead-offs. Meanwhile, freshman Kaylie Wallace added another impressive performance to her career, limiting the Hatters to just two hits in Game One. Wallace, who ranks 31st in the NCAA for ERA, pitched all 7.0 innings and had eight strikeouts in her second solo shutout of the season.
UCF makes its second trip to Jacksonville in five days. The Knights traveled to the River City for a single game with Jacksonville on Saturday. UCF was up on the Dolphins 4-0 when storms rolled through the Jacksonville-area, forcing a delay and before the game was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions. Prior to the game getting called, Hayley Barrow had a home run in the third inning. The Knights enter Wednesday winners of 18 of their last 22, which included an 11-game winning streak. The only losses UCF has suffered during that 22-game span were a one-run loss to Jacksonville on Feb. 24 and Conference-USA losses to Tulsa and Southern Miss.
In the most recent NCAA statistics, as a team, UCF is second in the nation in triples and in the top-50 for ERA (22nd), stolen bases (41st) and win-loss percentage (50th). Meanwhile, both Tawny Swan and Natalie Land are sixth nationally in triples (4). Land also leads the team in runs (23) and hits (34) and is one of four players with two home runs. Meanwhile, in the pitching circle, Mackenzie Audas is also having a stellar freshman season. Audas is 21st nationally in hits allowed per 7.0 innings, 23rd in strikeouts. She is also just ahead of UNF's Wallace in ERA, ranking 30th.
UCF leads the all-time series 6-4, but the Ospreys have won the last two meetings – both of which were in Orlando. UNF comes into the game ranking No. 65 in the first RPI standings of the season, which were released on Monday. Meanwhile, UCF has is No. 42 in the RPI rankings.
First pitch of the game will be at 6 p.m. Admission to all UNF softball games is free.
