DeLAND, Fla. – University of North Florida softball established a new winning-streak record for its Division I years by defeating Stetson 1-0 in Game One, but were tripped up by the Hatters in Game Two 7-0 on Monday afternoon at the Patricia Wilson Field in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams.
In Game One, both teams had just two hits and five strikeouts after four scoreless innings. However, that changed in the top of the fifth with a Marissa Thomas lead-off blast to left field that gave the Ospreys a 1-0 lead. Thomas' homer ultimately ended up being the difference maker.
Kaylie Wallace recorded her second-straight shutout in another strong outing. In 7.0 innings, Wallace only allowed two hits and fanned eight batters en route to her 11th win of the season.
Meredith Owen had the loss after allowing one run and five hits in 7.0 innings. She also had six strikeouts.
The win was UNF's nine-consecutive victory, becoming the Ospreys' longest Division I winning streak. UNF's previous Division I mark was eight games set Mar. 15-24, 2008. The longest streak in UNF's history is 24 games the occurred from Feb. 28-Mar. 23, 2004.
However, in Game Two, Stetson took advantage of multiple UNF miscues in order to get the win. In the first inning, Stetson went up 1-0 when a throwing error allowed Chrissy Morello to score. The Hatters added another run in the second with Kandi Kuder scoring on another UNF throwing miscue.
Stetson got two more runs on errors in the third in order to take a 4-0 lead. Then Demi Meza hit a three-run homer to center field in the sixth inning that gave Stetson a 7-0 advantage.
Courtney Brandt was credited with the win after allowing just one hit in 7.0 innings and striking out five.
Kayla Goff received the loss after Stetson got two unearned runs off three hits in 1.0 innings of work. Goff also recorded one strikeout.
UNF returns to action on Wednesday with a single game against UCF at the UNF Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
