Weekly Notes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With over a week since its last game, University of North Florida softball begins a busy week on Monday afternoon when the Ospreys travel to Stetson for an Atlantic Sun doubleheader.
The twinbill opens conference play for both teams. Since joining the A-Sun in 2006, UNF is 5-7 in conference openers and split its conference-opening series in each of its first five years in the league.
Monday is the start of seven games in six days for the Ospreys and includes three conference doubleheaders (Stetson, Lipscomb and Belmont) and a mid-week single game on Wednesday. Nine of UNF's next 10 games are against A-Sun opponents with the only non-conference game being Wednesday's game with UCF.
The Ospreys ride an eight-game winning streak into Monday's doubleheader after picking up a doubleheader sweep of Northern Iowa on Mar. 13 and then enjoying a 6-0 road trip to Clearwater. The Ospreys' eight-game winning streak ties their longest winning streak in their Division I years. UNF first won eight-straight from Mar. 15-24, 2008. The longest winning streak in program history is 24 games, which took place from Feb. 28-Mar. 23, 2004.
UNF is most recently coming off a pair of wins on the final day of the USF Tournament on Mar. 18, shutting out Iona 3-0 and then run-ruling Dartmouth 9-1 in five innings. As a result of her week in the pitching circle, Kaylie Wallace was tabbed the A-Sun's Pitcher of the Week.
Stetson has spent a majority of its schedule at its home field of Patricia Wilson Field and is 15-7 at home this season. The Hatters are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Savannah State on Saturday. Stetson and UNF shared many common non-conference opponents in Iona, Bethune-Cookman, Mount St. Mary's, Ball State, Northern Iowa and Dartmouth. Both Courtney Brandt and Meredith Owen enter the doubleheader with ERAs less than 2.00. Brandt had a 1.72 ERA in 61.0 innings, while Owen's ERA is 1.98 in 102.2 innings. Meanwhile, Chelsey Trotto enters the doubleheader with four homers and a team-best .327 clip. She's also second on the team in RBI (13) and runs (13).
The series between UNF and Stetson first took place in 1992 and was played every year until 1995. The series then resumed in 2006. The Ospreys lead the all-time series 14-10. UNF swept Stetson in last year's doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex. The last time the series was in DeLand, UNF and Stetson split with UNF winning Game One 3-1 and the Hatters taking Game Two on Mar. 17, 2010.
First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m., from Patricia Wilson Field.
