Baseball Opens Homestand with Pair of Midweek Games

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team begins a six-game homestand with a pair of midweek games at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys open the week against Savannah State on Tuesday, March 20 before taking on Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, March 21. Tuesday's game against the Tigers will be the first “Toss It Back Tuesday” of the season, featuring $1 beers while supplies last.
North Florida enters the week with a 13-7 overall record. The Ospreys return home after a seven-day road trip that featured five games. UNF was 2-3 on the week, splitting a two-game series with FIU and going 1-2 against Florida Gulf Coast.
The Ospreys lead the all-time series with Savannah State, 2-0. The first meeting between the two teams was a 28-4 victory by UNF on Feb. 26, 1994. The two teams played each other last season with the Ospreys claiming a 13-4 win on April 5.
In the last outing between the two teams, North Florida scored 13 runs on 13 hits, including three home runs and five doubles. Evan Stermer finished the day, 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk, a hit by pitch, three runs scored and four runs batted in. Alex Bacon was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, three runs scored and four RBI. On the mound, Tommy Organ earned the victory, working 3.0 innings in a controlled start, scattering three hits. He allowed one run with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.
UNF is 9-3 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, including a 7-0 record against the Wildcats in Harmon Stadium. Last season, each team won on their respective field. North Florida won the first two meetings between the two teams before dropping the first road game of the series. The Ospreys won the next four games in the series before dropping a road game to the Wildcats. In the last four meetings, UNF has won three games, all by one run, including a pair of extra inning contests.
North Florida's 11-inning 5-4 victory on April 13, 2010 was the 900th win in school history.
In the last meeting between the two teams, tied 5-5 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, Andrew Karmeris led off the inning with a walk-off home run to lift the baseball team to a 6-5 victory. Karmeris finished the game 2-for-5 with a home run, a run scored and two RBI.

Savannah State: Savannah State (8-12, 2-1 MEAC) collected 19 hits on the day but left 10 runners on base as the Tigers defeated Florida A&M in their last outing. Joseph McCrary and Rex Davis had a big day at the plate and on the mound respectively as Savannah State defeated FAMU, 12-6 at Moore-Kittles Field. McCrary had a single, double and a triple while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. Davis pitched seven innings and struck out six batters while giving up six hits and three runs.
Bethune-Cookman: After an outstanding week for the Bethune-Cookman (12-9, 3-2 MEAC) baseball team, this completed two series sweeps in extending their win streak to seven. Resulting from the outstanding performances in those wins, the Wildcats made it a third sweep this week, collecting all three weekly conference awards, officials from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced Monday, recognizing Anthony Stokes, Rayan Gonzalez, and Juan Pizarro.
