CLEARWATER, Fla. – University of North Florida softball closed out the USF Tournament with two wins, completing a 5-0 showing at the tournament and a 6-0 trip to Clearwater and the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Ospreys shutout Iona 3-0 in the day's first game and then posted a 9-1, six-inning victory against Dartmouth in Game Two.
In Game One, back-to-back RBI singles by Kelly Dill and Chie Someya put UNF up 2-0 in the second inning. Stephanie McAdam scored from second on Dill's hit, while Marissa Thomas reached home from second on Someya's hit.
In the third inning, an illegal pitch advance Kaley Brosky home and gave UNF the 3-0 advantage.
Kaylie Wallace got her 10th win of the season and struck out six while pitching all 7.0 innings. Wallace only allowed five hits in the game.
Sarah Jackson received the loss after giving up three runs off four hits in 6.0 innings. Jackson also recorded four strikeouts.
Brosky, Dill, Lauren Pollack and Someya all registered hits for UNF against Iona.
In the second game, UNF and Dartmouth played through two scoreless innings before the Big Green got the game's first run in the top of the third. A Kat Hicks' RBI single scored Kara Curosh to make it a 1-0 game.
However, UNF answered with a five-run third inning to take the lead. Jackie Reese brought in the Ospreys' first two runs with a bases-loaded single to the right center gap. A Brosky single allowed Someya to score and put UNF up 3-1. Meanwhile, Reese got home on an Alyson Bailey hit and gave UNF the three-run advantage.
The Ospreys proceeded to take advantage of back-to-back errors by Dartmouth. The first Big Green miscue loaded the bases and then the second allowed Brosky to score and make it a 5-1 game.
UNF added two more in each the fifth and sixth innings. With runners in scoring position, Marissa Thomas belted a two-run hit to left field, bringing home Dill and Megan David in the fifth. An error-plagued sixth inning for Dartmouth resulted in Someya scoring on a fielding miscue to make it 8-1. In the next at-bat, Reese beat out a throw to the plate to score the game's final run.
Kayla Goff received the win after pitching the final 3.1 innings. Goff struck out four and only gave up one hit.
Kristen Rumley had the loss, allowing seven runs off eight hits in 5.0 innings. She also fanned six batters.
Eight different Ospreys each recorded one hit, while Bailey, Reese and Thomas each had two RBI.
UNF has just over a week in between games. The Ospreys are back in action on Monday, Mar. 26 when they travel to Stetson for an Atlantic Sun Conference-opening doubleheader. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 4 p.m., at Stetson.
