SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of North Florida women's basketball embarks on their final out-of-town trip of the regular this weekend, first stopping at USC Upstate for a Thursday night tilt at the Hodge Center at 7 p.m.
UNF comes off a 59-56 victory against second-place Stetson on Saturday at UNF Arena. The Ospreys got 36 points from in the paint against the Hatters. Larkira Jones got most of her team-best 14 points from the field, going 6-for-8 for the game.
Brittany Kirkland illustrious career is closer to two more milestones. With 1493 points, Kirkland is just seven shy of 1,500 career points. The Monroe, Ga.,- native is the Atlantic Sun's active career leading scorer. Kirkland ranks second all-time in scoring in UNF's 20-year history – trailing All-American Skye Barber – and has the most points for any player in the Ospreys' Division I years. Last season, Kirkland reached 1,000 points in the Ospreys' 91-73 win against USC Upstate on Jan. 15, 2011. Additionally, Kirkland has 107 starts to her career, just one away from tying Barber's program record of 108.
The Spartans saw a four-game winning streak come to an end last weekend with a pair of road losses at Kennesaw State and Mercer. However, USC Upstate has won its last four games at the Hodge Center. Tee'Ara Copney has led the Spartans in scoring in each of those home games and averaged 17.5 ppg in those contests. She comes off a 30-point performance at Mercer, her second 30+ point game of the season. Copney leads the Spartans in scoring with 16.0 ppg, which is third in the Atlantic Sun.
UNF holds a 12-7 advantage in the all-time series, but USC Upstate prevailed in this season's earlier meeting. Briana Robinson hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to lift the Spartans 58-57 on Jan. 14.
