STATESBORO, Ga. – A 12-game road stretch ends this weekend for the University of North Florida softball team as the Ospreys travel to the three-day Eagle Classic at Georgia Southern. It will be UNF's second tournament of the season and last road trip for nearly three weeks.
“We are anxious to get back on the playing field after having a week off,” said head coach Marcie Hickey. “The high level of competition at this weekend's tournament will really show us where we stand. We're going into the weekend with a lot of confidence due to our strong start and we are looking to continue that momentum over to this tournament.”
UNF is off to one of its best starts in recent years, compiling a 5-2 mark through its first seven games. For their first tournament, the Ospreys opened the 2012 campaign with a 4-1 showing at the Dot Richardson National Collegiate Softball Invitational. UNF outscored opponents 37-25 en route to defeating Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and Ohio State in its opening weekend. Heading into the weekend, the Ospreys have outscored opponents 46-29.
UNF was last in action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 with a mid-week doubleheader at Florida A&M. The Ospreys and Lady Rattlers split with Florida A&M having a 2-1 win in Game One and UNF taking a commanding 8-2 win in Game Two.
The Ospreys face Albany, Kentucky, Jacksonville State and host Georgia Southern this weekend. Albany, Kentucky and Jacksonville State all reached the 2011 NCAA Tournament last year.
Albany opens the 2012 season this weekend. The Great Danes were picked to finish second in the America East, just behind Boston University – another team the Ospreys will face later this season. Albany won last year's America East Tournament, but graduated its top three batters from a year ago. However, the Great Danes get ball all three of their pitchers from last year in Brittany Schweiger, Brittany MacFawn and Allie Weiser. UNF and Albany meet twice this weekend, playing at 9:30 a.m., on Friday and then at 1:30 p.m., on Sunday. The series is tied at 1-1 with the two teams splitting a doubleheader on Feb. 18, 2009. Albany squeaked out a 1-0 win in the first game, but UNF took the second 4-1.
Kentucky received votes in the latest NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll. This weekend will be the third consecutive tournament for the Wildcats, who previously played at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif., and the Florida Atlantic Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton. Kentucky faced nationally-ranked opponents at both tournaments in UCLA (then-No. 19 at Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament) and Michigan (then-No. 11 at the Florida Atlantic Kickoff Classic). Kara Dill enters the weekend with a six-game hitting streak and is also the team's top batter with a .321 clip and nine hits. Kentucky leads the all-time series between the Wildcats and UNF 1-0. The Wildcats won 5-2 on Feb. 13, 2011 at the Combat Classic.
Jacksonville State dropped their first five games, but posted a 15-10 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. The Gamecocks' game against UNF is their second against an Atlantic Sun team this season as Jacksonville State opened the season with a 2-0 loss to Lipscomb at the South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational. Kaycee Crow was 5-for-7 at last weekend's JSU Invitational with two home runs, a double and four RBI en route to being named the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Kristin Graham is hitting a team-best .500 on the season, going 10-for-20 with two doubles and a triple. UNF holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series, capturing a 10-2 victory on Mar. 6, 2010 at the Buzz Classic.
This Sunday's game will be the first of three games between UNF and Georgia Southern this year. The next two will be a doubleheader set for Apr. 18 in Statesboro, Ga. The Eagles are 10 games into their season with a 5-5 record and have played at two tournaments. Georgia Southern already opened the home portion of its scheduled when it split a doubleheader with Georgia State on Feb. 15. Brooke Red was selected as the SoCon's Pitcher of the Week after going 13.2 innings without an earned run last week. Red has a 0.60 ERA for the season with two wins and has allowed three runs – two earned – of 12 hits in seven appearances. She has also struck out 12. UNF holds an 11-6 lead in the all-time series, but Georgia Southern won the last two by sweeping a doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex on Mar. 23, 2011.
The weekend begins on Friday with UNF's first game against Albany at 9:30 a.m., and then Kentucky at 11:30 a.m. The Ospreys have one game on Saturday with a 9:30 a.m., tilt against Jacksonville State. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the Ospreys' second game against Albany at 1:30 p.m., and then face host Georgia Southern at 3:30 p.m.
