
Softball Tops Albany, Falls to Kentucky on Day One of Eagle Classic

STATESBORO, Ga. – University of North Florida softball split on the opening day of the Eagle Classic, starting the day with a 3-2 win against Albany before dropping an 8-3 game to Kenucky at Eagle Field.
UNF and Albany battled it out in a pitching duel in Game One. The game was scoreless through the first five-and-a-half innings with the two teams combining for just four hits and 13 strikeouts those innings.
Marissa Thomas' lead-off home run in the bottom of the sixth broke the scoreless game and put UNF up 1-0. The Ospreys got two more runs later in the inning when Lauren Pollack smacked a two-out double to right center, driving in Danica Mandarano and Mariah Reynolds and giving UNF a 3-0 lead.
Albany responded in the top of the seventh with a two-out, two-run homer from Charlise Castro. However, UNF got the inning's final out in the next at-bat with Jess Tate grounding out to Alyson Bailey at third.
Kaylie Wallace pitched all 7.0 innings in order to pick up the win and move to 4-0 on the season. Wallace fanned seven batters and allowed two runs off four hits.
Brittany MacFawn had the loss after allowing three runs of eight hits in 6.0 innings. She also tallied nine strikeouts.
Seven different Ospreys registered hits in the game with Reynolds leading the way with two.
In Game Two, Kentucky, who received votes in the latest NFCA/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll, jumped out to a 6-0 lead, getting one run in the first and then five in the second. Brittany Cervantes put the Wildcats up 1-0 when she scored on a Rachel Riley single in the first.
In the second inning, the Wildcats went up by two with Macy Allen scoring on Emily Gaines RBI single. Then Ginny Carroll scored from third on a fielder's choice, while Gaines reached home on a Griffin Joiner RBI single. Kentucky's final two runs of the inning were the result of bases loaded walks.
UNF got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. The Ospreys capitalized on a Kentucky error in the outfield, allowing Jackie Reese to score from second and make it a 6-1 game.
Kentucky took advantage of two UNF miscues to score its final two runs of the game. Alice O'Brien scored on a fifth-inning miscue, while Gaines reached home in the seventh behind an UNF error.
The Ospreys cut into Kentucky's lead in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on first and second, Chie Someya drilled a two-run double to left center that brought in Mandarano and Kelly Dill.
Riley (2-1) picked up the win after pitching all 7.0 inning. She recorded three strikeouts and allowed three runs – two earned – off six hits.
Kayla Goff (1-2) received the loss after throwing the first 1.1 innings, allowing six runs – five of which were earned – off five hits.
Pollack was a team-best 2-for-3 from the plate for the Ospreys.
UNF continues play at the Eagle Classic on Saturday with just one game. The Ospreys face Jacksonville State at 9:30 a.m., at Eagle Field.
