Baseball Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Series Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Trailing by nine late in the game, the University of North Florida mounted a comeback in the final two innings that fell just short as the Ospreys dropped a 16-12 decision to Southern Illinois in the final game of the opening weekend at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
North Florida and SIU combined for 30 hits on the day with the Salukis taking the edge offensively with 18 hits compared to 12 by the Ospreys. UNF belted four home runs on the afternoon, getting long balls from Corey Bass, Joe Iorio, Tyler Marincov and Byran Mathews.
In addition, Bass, Marincov and Drew Weeks each finished with two hits apiece. Bass finished the game with a double and a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, while Marincov went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBI. Iorio tied Marincov with a team-best three-RBI on the day.
On the mound, the Ospreys used seven pitchers on the day. The North Florida pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts, but walked a total of six batters.
Tommy Organ earned the start and took the loss for North Florida. The southpaw scattered five hits, surrendering five runs, but only two earned runs. The junior struck out four batters, but was hurt by three walks.
Chandler Jagodzinski tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run. Kyle Westwood saw his first action of the year, tossing an inning, striking out one and allowing apair of runs. Evan Incinelli saw his first collegiate action on the mound. The rookie had a rough outing, surrendering five runs – four earned runs – on three hits and a walk in 0.1 innings of work. Evan Stermer, Andrew Karmeris and Trey Ferrano combined for the final 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. A. Karmeris and Ferrano each had a pair of strikeouts.
Southern Illinois was the first team to score. The Salukis opened the game with an infield single and a double down the left field line to place a pair of base runners in scoring position. A walk loaded the bases. Organ fanned the next batter for the first out of the inning, but a two-RBI single gave the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Organ induced an inning-ending double play to escape the inning without allowing any more runs.
Neither team was able to score until the fifth inning. SIU extended its lead to 6-0 with four runs in the fourth inning. The Salukis recorded just a pair of hits in the inning, but were aided in the inning by a pair of North Florida errors.
North Florida scratched the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mathews belted his first collegiate home run. The designated hitter lifted a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall to trim the deficit to 6-1.
After holding the Salukis scoreless in the top of sixth inning, the Ospreys inched closer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, A. Karmeris drew a walk and he came around to score as Marincov blasted his first home run of the season over the left field wall, cutting the margin to 6-3.
SIU answered with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Salukis used a double to start the inning and a walk gave the visitors a pair of base runners. Back-to-back single scored a pair of runs to push the Saluki lead to 8-3. The Ospreys escaped the inning without any further damage with a strikeout and an unassisted double play.
Trailing 8-3, UNF mounted a comeback. With one out, Mathews walked to start things off for the Ospreys. Garrick Ferguson pinch ran for Mathews and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by Bass. Joe Wielbruda followed with a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Ferguson and Bass. After a pitching change, A. Karmeris extended the inning with a single to right field. With runners on second and third, Marincov reached base on a dropped fly ball by the SIU left fielder, scoring Wielbruda on the sacrifice fly and cutting the deficit to just 8-6.
Southern Illinois rallied in the top of the eighth inning with seven runs. The Salukis scored seven runs on six hits and an error to extend their lead to 15-6. A three-RBI double by SIU's Brian Bajer capped off the inning for the Salukis.
North Florida chipped away at the SIU lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs and a runner on first base, Bass homered to center field. The home run was Bass' first of the season and trimmed the margin to 15-8.
SIU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. A solo home run by Donny Dushchinsky gave Southern Illinois a 16-8 advantage.
UNF mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning. Marincov led off the inning with a single up the middle. With one out, Dillon Ennis pinch hit and doubled down the left field line to give the Ospreys a pair of base runners in scoring position. T.J. Gavlik pinch hit and reached base on a fielding error by the Salukis. On the play, Ennis advanced to third and Marincov came around to score. With two on and two outs, Iorio hit his first collegiate home run. The three-run shot to left center field cut the deficit to 16-12. The rally would go no further as a strikeout ended the game.
North Florida returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, as the Ospreys head to Tampa, Fla. for a midweek game against USF. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
