Softball Takes 7-4 Win Against Bethune-Cookman

CLERMONT, Fla. – A five-run sixth inning propelled University of North Florida softball to a 7-4 comeback victory over Bethune-Cookman on the final day of the Dot Richardson Collegiate Softball Invitational. The win allowed UNF to finish with a 4-1 record on opening weekend.
Bethune-Cookman jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. In the top of the second, Karina Romero's RBI single brought in Michelle Banuelos-Smith for the game's first run. In the fourth, Simone Ceasar scored on a Romero triple, while later in the inning Romero scored on a Calesha Shelley single.
UNF cut into the Lady Wildcats' lead in the fifth. A Jackie Reese single up the middle brought in Brittany Hendrix to make it a 3-1 game. Then with Jackie Reese on second and two outs, Marissa Thomas sent a ball through the left side to bring home Jackie Reese and make it a one-run game.
Bethune-Cookman got another run in the top of the six with Lara Reese scoring on a Shelley single. However, UNF rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Alyson Bailey doubled to lead off the Ospreys' offense and a Danica Mandarano single brought in Bailey. Mandarano later scored the tying run on a fielder's choice that allowed Chie Someya be safe at first and Kelly Dill safe at second. A Jackie Reese single drove in Dill to give the Ospreys a 5-4 advanatage. Then with the bases loaded, Thomas ripped a double to left field, bringing home both Someya and Jackie Reese.
Thomas was 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI. Jackie Reese went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Ashley Brown pitched the final 3.2 innings to get the win. Brown allowed just one run in four hits and struck out two.
Shanel Tolbert had the loss for the Lady Wildcats after going all 6.0 innings and allowing seven runs off nine hits and striking out three.
UNF returns to action on Wednesday for a mid-week doubleheader at Florida A&M. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
