TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's cross country team wrapped up its 2012 campaign on Friday morning, taking 12th place at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country South Regional Championships at Apalachee Regional Park.
The Ospreys, who entered the meet ranked 13th in the South Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches of America, earned a total of 360 points, just nine points short of 11th-place Georgia State and 22 points ahead of 13th-place Southern Mississippi.
“We beat a lot of really good programs this morning,” Head Coach Jeff Pigg said. “We feel like we could have finished a couple places higher, but I'm very proud of the way the girls ran today.”
UNF finished second among Atlantic Sun teams, as conference champion Lipscomb earned a seventh-place finish with 271 points. Host and defending champion Florida State took home their third consecutive South Regional team championship, scoring just 24 points. Vanderbilt took second with 112 points, edging out third-place Georgia, who finished with 115.
Senior Shelby Kittrell led the way for the Ospreys for the second consecutive meet, taking 33rd place with a time of 20:58.6. Fellow senior Meggie Emons was next for UNF, clocking a 21:21.0 on the 6k-meter course to finish 53rd.
Sophomore Alessandra Valdes was the third Osprey across the line for the second time this season, finishing 83rd in a time of 21:50.5. Senior Ecaterina Gheorghiu was close behind Valdes, finishing 91st in 21:58.4.
Sophomore Elle Baker clocked a personal-best time of 22:17.6 en route to a 110th place finish, while freshman Alexis Irwin (22:23.1, 115th) and junior Allison Spiegel (22:36.8, 126th) rounded out the UNF performances on the day.
Senior Violah Lagat of Florida State took home individual medalist honors with a time of 20:06.6, besting fellow Seminoles Colleen Quigley (20:12.0) and Amanda Winslow (20:13.9).
“I can't say enough about how easy these girls made my first season here at UNF,” Pigg said. “I couldn't have asked for a better group of seniors either.”
The Ospreys will kick off the 2013 track and field season in January, when they travel to the Jimmy Carnes Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. on January 12, 2013.
