
Women’s Tennis to Open A-Sun Tournament

DeLAND, Fla. – The No. 3 seeded University of North Florida women's tennis team will open up the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 14 at 11:30 a.m. against crosstown rival, No. 6 seeded, Jacksonville at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in DeLand, Fla.
Leading the UNF (13-6, 8-2 A-Sun) this year are all-conference selections Danielle Day and Aline Berkenbrock who earned first team honors. Simona Weymar was named to the second team and picked up All-Freshman team recognition while Day and partner Melanie Aguirre were recognized for their doubles play by earning a spot on the second team after tallying a 14-5 record this season.
Weymar is 15-4 on the season, playing primarily in the No. 5 where she has a 12-2 record. She is 9-1 in A-Sun action. Day is 13-6, including 7-3 in league matches, playing primarily in the No. 2. Aguirre is 12-7 and 8-2 in the A-Sun, playing primarily in the No. 4.
Senior Victoria Krook has posted a record this season of 11-6 with a 7-2 mark in the conference. Berkenbrock came back mid-season to the No. 1 after an early injury. She has a 6-7 overall record, but is 5-4 in the league. Melinda Doak has notched a 6-4 A-Sun mark at the No. 6.
UNF defeated JU (15-6, 6-4 A-Sun), 4-3 less than a week ago in both teams last conference match of the season. After losing the doubles point, Day, Aguirre, Weymar and Doak all picked up singles wins to propel the Ospreys to the victory.
The Ospreys are the defending conference champions after winning the tournament one season ago, defeating ETSU in the finals.
The Dolphins are led by A-Sun Player of the Year, Eve Castaing. Flavia Nagayama earned second team recognition and was tabbed to the All-Freshman team. Teammate Gabriela Bartos also earned All-Freshman accolades.
The winner of Thursday's match will advance to the semifinals on Friday, April 15 to face No. 2 seeded Campbell at 11:30 a.m.
