TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team dropped both games of its non-conference doubleheader to Florida State at JoAnne Graf Field on Wednesday afternoon. Up next, North Florida returns to conference play as the squad hosts Campbell on Friday, April 15, for a doubleheader matchup. The first pitch of game is slated for 5 p.m. (ET).
GAME ONE
North Florida allowed Florida State to rally for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including 17 hits over the course of the game, to drop game one in heartbreaking fashion, 9-7, to the Seminoles.
The Ospreys took a commanding lead early, plating five runs in the third inning, followed by two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. However, North Florida surrendered eight Seminole runs in the bottom of the fourth to five Florida State an 8-7 advantage through four innings.
Despite the efforts by North Florida to rally with junior Kaley Brosky's second double of the game in the fifth, the Ospreys would fall short as Florida State tacked on one more run in the fifth to make the score 9-7, effectively putting away the Ospreys in the first game of the doubleheader.
The winning and losing pitchers for both teams entered the game in relief. Freshman Cortney Radke (18-16) was tagged with the loss after 2.2 innings of relief work, allowing four runs on nine hits and just two strikeouts. Despite allowing eight hits, Florida State's Jessica Nori (4-4) picked up the win while working five shutout innings, including five strikeouts.
Freshmen Mariah Reynolds and Danica Mandarano both finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI each.
GAME TWO
In game two, Florida State jumped on North Florida early, plating four runs in the first two innings never looking back as the Seminoles finished the doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 victory.
After Florida State scored one run in the first and three in the second, the Seminoles added two more runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead over the Ospreys through four innings.
North Florida finally did get on the board in the sixth inning with two outs when freshman Lauren Pollack laced a single up the middle to score sophomore Jackie Reese from second to cut the lead to 6-1. Unfortunately, for the Ospreys, the damage had been done.
Junior Chie Someya (3-3) was tagged with the loss after working just two innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on seven hits and two walks. The Seminoles' Sarah Hamilton (14-3) earned the win after working a two-hit complete game in which she allowed just one run and fanned 14 batters.
