STATESBORO, Ga. – Bolstered by career and season best performances from several players the University of North Florida golf team posted a fifth-place finish Sunday at the 32nd annual Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Country Club.
The Ospreys posted a final round two-over-par 290 and finished with a three-day total of 863 en route to their third Top Five showing of the spring season. The tournament score marked the low tally for the squad this season.
Junior Kevin Aylwin fired a five-under 67 to finish tied for second at 208, just one shot behind the individual medalist. For the weekend, the New Smyrna Beach, Fla., product collected career best performances for a single round, tournament total and tournament finish. It also marked his team leading four tournament finish under par.
In addition, junior Joe Byun earned his first Top 20 showing of the year finishing tied for 15th at 217 including a final round of even par 72.
Senior Jacob Davidson earned a tie for 26th (219) after a 76 on the last day while sophomore Kevin Phelan shot a 75 to finish tied for 36th (221) and junior Major Forbess tied for 63rd (228) following a 77 on Sunday. Joey Marino, playing as an individual, tied for 70th with a total of 230 (77).
“This was a solid finish for our team with all the teams finishing ahead of us ranked in the Top 15 in the country,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Kevin (Aylwin) had a great event. He is showing that he can play with anybody in the country. Joe also had his best event and we need him to continue improving as we move to the close of the regular season.”
Auburn and Florida both finished at 848 forcing a playoff which the Tigers captured on the first hole. Virginia finished third at 858 followed by LSU (862), UNF, North Carolina State (865), North Carolina (880), Minnesota (880), Georgia Southern (880), Tennessee (881), Ole Miss (883), Notre Dame (888), Vanderbilt (896), Kentucky (896) and Mississippi State (916).
Gator senior Bank Vongvanij led wire-to-wire in capturing the individual medalist with a nine-under-par 207.
North Florida will play its third tournament of a two-week span on Mar. 27-29 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Charleston, S.C.
