BRASELTON, Ga. – The No. 44-ranked University of North Florida men's golf team carded a final round 286 to finish in second-place Wednesday at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship held on the Chateau Course of Chateau Elan.
UNF finished with a three-day total 854 at the 54-hole event, edging Campbell by one shot for the runner-up honor. Sophomore Kevin Phelan (T-2nd) and junior Kevin Aylwin (T-8th) both posted Top 10 showings in leading the Ospreys.
Phelan finished in a four-way tie for second in the individual medalist competition posting a three-day tally of 210 (-3) including a final round two-under 69. The runner-up showing matched the best finish of his career and was his fourth Top Five finish this season. With his finish, Phelan also earned All-Tournament honors.
Aylwin fired a 73 (+2) on Wednesday finishing with an even-par 213 for the event. For the week, he upped his team leading totals to 12 rounds under par and six Top 10 tournament finishes this year.
Junior Joe Byun finished tied for 14th at 215 (+2) and senior Chris Kennedy was tied for 17th at 216 (+3), giving UNF a quartet of players among the Top 20 individuals. Senior Jacob Davidson rounded out the Osprey lineup finishing tied for 37th at 222 (+9). Kennedy carded an even par 71 final round, while Byun and Davidson each posted rounds of 73 (+2) on the last day.
“Not the way we had hoped to finish up on the final day,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We got off to a poor start and just could never get anything going. I'm really proud of Phelan finishing tied for second which is really solid. The guys will return home and get ready for exams and then turn their focus to preparing for NCAA Regionals in a month.”
Kennesaw State (845) led wire-to-wire in capturing the team crown by nine shots over the Ospreys. The Owls were the lone squad to finish under par at the championship. Campbell finished in third at 855 followed by Mercer (860), ETSU (861), Florida Gulf Coast (866), USC Upstate (866), Belmont (874), Jacksonville (876), Stetson (879) and Lipscomb (900).
KSU's Jeff Karlsson finished at six-under-par 207 earning the individual medalist title by three strokes over Phelan, KSU's Matt Nagy, Campbell's Matt Moot and Hans Reimers of Mercer.
The Ospreys will not have a month off from competition before returning to the links on May 19-21 in the NCAA Regionals
