
Softball Defeats Rutgers; Falls to Long Island

CLEARWATER, Fla. – For the second day in a row, the North Florida softball team (14-12) split games at the USF The Game Tournament at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Ospreys began the day by defeating Rutgers (10-14), 9-3, and followed up with a 4-2 loss to Long Island (8-21) on Saturday.
The Ospreys close out tournament play on Sunday at noon with a matchup against UT-Chattanooga.
GAME ONE
Junior Kaley Brosky hit 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead North Florida over Rutgers, 9-3, in game one. Eight of nine Osprey batters connected for at least one hit during the game, tallying 12 hits on the Scarlet Knights' pitchers.
North Florida's freshman pitcher Cortney Radke (12-8) hurled a complete game, allowing three runs – two earned – while striking out 10 and walking just one.
Rutgers went up 2-0 early in the first inning, but would be shutdown until the seventh inning when it added just one more run. The Ospreys had tied the game at 2-2 by the end of the third inning.
North Florida exploded for five runs in the fourth to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Brosky batted in the final two runs of the inning on a single to right field, plating runners from first and third base.
After two more runs in the sixth for the North Florida squad, making the score 9-2, Rutgers attempted a late rally in the seventh but would manage just one run.
The Scarlet Knights' starting hurler Megan Williams (5-3) was tagged with the loss after pitching just 3.0 innings and allowing five runs – all earned – on eight hits.
GAME TWO
North Florida took an early 2-0 lead, but allowed Long Island to score four unanswered runs, eventually falling to the Blackbirds, 4-2.
The Ospreys scored a run in the first inning as well as the third to take a 2-0 lead over Long Island. However, the next four runs would belong to the Blackbirds and the Long Island squad would hang on to claim the victory.
The Blackbirds' hurler Sheaf (2-7) picked up the win, working a complete game and allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out seven Osprey batters.
Junior Chie Someya (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing all four runs – three earned – on five hits in 4.2 innings of work.
