JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's basketball defense dominated Monday night as the Ospreys overpowered Coastal Carolina 67-37 at UNF Arena for UNF's first win of the season.
Brittany Kirkland and Larkira Jones recorded 14 and 10 points, respectively. Kirkland, Jasmine Hicks and Fabiola Josil each swiped a team-best three balls as UNF (1-5) made a season-best 14 steals on the evening. Josil also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Kira Carter and Shatia Cole led Coastal Carolina (4-1) with eight points each, while Shanika Maddox grabbed nine boards. Taylor Epley accounted for four of the Chanticleers' seven steals.
UNF's defense was not one to be reckon with on Monday night. The Ospreys defense forced Coastal Carolina to make 25 turnovers – including 16 in the first half. UNF also held its opponent scoreless from three-point range – the first time that has happened in the program's Division I history. Overall, Coastal Carolina shot just 25 percent from the floor, going 15-for-60 on the evening.
Offensively, UNF shot 46.4 percent, including 51.9 percent in the second half. The Ospreys were 26-for-56. UNF capitalized on the Chanticleers' miscues, scoring 29 points off turnovers.
The game started out close with neither team getting a significant lead during the opening 10 minutes of the first half. The largest lead by either team at that point was five as a Kim Baker jumper put UNF up 12-7 at the 12:21 mark. Back-to-back Coastal Carolina buckets made it a one-point game, but the Ospreys unleashed a 17-4 run in the final 9:19 of the half. A three-pointer by Octavia Langston sparked the run, which featured points from six different Ospreys. UNF held a 14-point, 29-15 lead going into halftime.
The Ospreys continued to build on their lead in the second half, while maintaining a tough defense. Up by 17, UNF used a 14-2 run to take a commanding 57-29 lead with 5:32 to go. The Ospreys ultimately led by as many as 33 when Destinee Smith hit a jumper with 52 seconds remaining to make it 67-34.
UNF returns to action on Saturday when the Ospreys face cross-town rival Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams. Saturday's game, which is also a doubleheader with men's basketball, is a White Out with fans encouraged to wear white. Tip-off for the women's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
