JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Leading the entire game, University of North Florida women's basketball got its first Atlantic Sun win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 51-36 defeat of crosstown rival Jacksonville at UNF Arena.
Brittany Kirkland scored a game and season-high 16 points. Larkira Jones and Jasmine Hicks each pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Fabiola Josil dished out five assists.
Crystal Bell paced the Dolphins (0-7, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) with 10 points. Jade Cargill had nine rebounds and made five steals.
UNF (2-5, 1-0 Atlantic Sun) kept Jacksonville from reaching double-digits in points for much of the first half. Up by three, a Josil jumper was the first point of a 9-1 run that saw the Ospreys take a 17-5 advantage at the 5:32 mark. Jacksonville pulled to within eight behind back-to-back jumpers, but Kirkland hit two threes in the final 2:50 as UNF ultimately carried a 23-11 lead into halftime.
The Ospreys came out firing in the second half, using a 12-3 run to build a 20-point, 12-3 cushion with 16:03 to go. Jacksonville cut UNF's lead down to 13 with 12:31 remaining, but the Ospreys built up their second 20 point advantage behind a 9-2 run. Destinee Smith's layup at 7:44 put UNF ahead 47-27. The Dolphins made an effort to chip away at UNF's lead, but the Ospreys held a pair of 17-point advantages late in the half en route to winning the game.
UNF outshot and dominated on rebounding. The Ospreys were 21-for-54 from the floor and shot 38.9 percent. UNF pulled down a season-best 56 rebounds, while the Dolphins came up with 40. Jacksonville shot 17.6 percent for the game, going 12-for-68.
UNF returns to the road for its next two games. The Ospreys visit West Virginia on Saturday, Dec. 10 for a game at Noon at the WVU Coliseum.
