JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A barrel point and an Atlantic Sun Conference win are at stake Saturday afternoon when University of North Florida women's basketball takes on crosstown rival Jacksonville at UNF Arena at 3 p.m.
Saturday's game will be the first of two meetings for the Ospreys and Dolphins this season. Winner of the game will score a barrel point for its athletic department the Suntrust River City Rumble. UNF currently leads Jacksonville 4-2 in the standings.
Additionally, it will be the first Atlantic Sun game for either team. UNF is an all-time 2-4 in Atlantic Sun openers, but has never faced Jacksonville to start league play.
Saturday will be the second-straight home game for the Ospreys. UNF picked up its first win of the season on Monday night by dominating Coastal Carolina 67-37. Behind a stifling defense, the Ospreys made a season-best 14 steals, while keeping Coastal Carolina scoreless from three-point range. Brittany Kirkland, Jasmine Hicks and Fabiola Josil generated most of UNF's steals with each player getting three swipes. Kirkland also scored a game-best 14 points.
Jacksonville is searching for its first win of the season after starting the year on a six-game skid. Jacksonville fell 67-64 in overtime to Savannah State on Tuesday night. Crystal Bell and Abril Peeples tallied 15 and 11 points, respectively, while Jade Cargill grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds. Bell and Peeples both average over 10 points per contest, while Tracie Sneed is right behind them with 9.8 points per game. Bell also leads the Dolphins in rebounding with 7.2 per contest.
Jacksonville leads the all-time series 9-5 and took the last meeting 56-52 in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Tournament opening round. However, UNF has won four of the last five in the series, including both regular season games last year. The series is tied 3-3 when being played at UNF Arena.
