
Women's Basketball Suffers 64-61 Overtime Setback Against Savannah State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Playing in front of 3,461 fans on Elementary School Day, University of North Florida women's basketball rallied late in the second half, but fell to Savannah State 64-61 in overtime on Thursday at UNF Arena in the Ospreys' home opener.
Fabiola Josil, Brittany Kirkland and Octavia each scored in the double-digits for the Ospreys (0-3). Josil led the way with a team-best 21 points, while Kirkland and Langston added in 11 and 10, respectively. Larkira Jones grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds. Jones also had a team-best three assists and three steals – both of which tied her career-high marks.
Ezinne Kalu powered the Lady Tigers' (2-0) offense with 35 points, shooting 10-for-22 from the field, including 5-for-10 from three-point range. Blessing Uba chipped in with 17 points and five steals, while Alisha Nelson recorded a team-best seven rebounds.
UNF came back from an early eight-point deficit in the first half. A layup from Jadhken Kerr started a 9-3 run that brought UNF to within two and make it a 13-11 game in favor of Savannah State at the 12:04 mark.
Although the Lady Tigers responded with a 9-2 run in order to take a nine-point lead, a Josil jumper was the first of nine-straight UNF points. The Ospreys' 9-0 streak tied the game at 22-22 with 2:45 left in the first half. However, Savannah State outscored UNF 5-1 to close out the half and enter the break with a 27-23 lead.
Savannah State built on its lead early in the second half, going up 43-33 at 11:30. UNF chipped away at the Lady Tigers' advantage. With Savannah State up by two, Langston hit a critical three-point shot take put UNF ahead 51-50 with 3:22 left in the half. A Josil jumper at 2:02 pushed the Ospreys' lead to three, but Savannah State tied the game twice in the final minute, including at 14 seconds with a Kalu jumper that deadlocked the game at 55-55 and forced overtime.
Overtime started with a 6-0 Savannah State run. UNF cut the Lady Tigers' lead down to two with a Langston jumper with two seconds remaining to make it 63-61 in favor of Savannah State. However, Kalu hit a foul shot with one second left to lift the Lady Tigers.
UNF outshot and out-rebounded the Lady Tigers. The Ospreys shot 44.2 percent (23-for-52) from the floor, while Savannah State hit 41.7 percent (20-for-48) of its shots. UNF held a 41-25 advantage in rebounds.
UNF returns to action on Sunday when the Ospreys take on Missouri in Columbia, Mo. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
