Swimming/Diving Hosts First Home Meet of Year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team opened up the 2011-12 season with a solid showing at the All-Florida Invitational and now the Ospreys are set for their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 29 as North Florida hosts Campbell and FIU in a double dual meet at the UNF Aquatic Center at 2 p.m. Admission to the swimming and diving meet is FREE.
The Ospreys kicked off the 2011-12 season with a seventh place finish in the prestigious All-Florida Invitational on Oct. 7-9. Fourteen of the 17-member roster competed with 10 of the 11 freshmen on the squad taking part in their first collegiate meet.
Freshman Christine Kemp made an immediate impact in her Osprey debut. The rookie posted a time of 17:53.35 in the 1,650-yard freestyle to put her name in North Florida's Career Top 10 annals.
The last time out, North Florida started the first day of the invitational with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Rebeca Bernard, Maria Bernard, Kemp and Natalie McCallum posted a time of 1:40.13 as the top finishers for UNF in the event. Lissa Janowicz, Bridget Woods and Emily Wynn teamed with Sara Evans for their first collegiate event. In the 500 freestyle, Kemp was the top finisher of the day for the Ospreys. The freshman came in with a time of 5:07.93. Woods and Evans finished back-to-back in the 200 individual medley. Woods posted a time of 2:09.80, while Evans was nine hundreds of a second off of the pace at 2:09.89. In the 400 medley relay, the UNF team of Kristina Alexiou, Woods, McCallum and Kemp took the top finish among Osprey relay teams with a time of 3:59.92. The team of Gala Poon, Evans, Janowicz and R. Bernard finished the event four spots back.
In the diving competition, Julia Moomaw was the Ospreys' top finisher with 214.30 points in 1-meter diving. Monica Rice recorded 193.45 points in her first collegiate competition.
On day two, in the 200-yard medley relay, UNF's team of Katie England, Woods, Janowicz and McCallum recorded the best time of the night for the Ospreys with a time of 1:52.71. Four spots back were the team of Poon, Evans and M. and R. Bernard. McCallum and Evans finished 1-2 for the Ospreys in the 400 individual medley. Kemp also posted the best finish of the day for North Florida in the 200 freestyle. Woods was the top finisher of the day for the Ospreys in the 100 breaststroke. The Bernard twins, Kemp and McCallum all teamed up for the top finish of the day in the 800 freestyle relay for UNF.
In the 3-meter diving, Moomaw posted a score of 208.15 to post the top mark for the Ospreys.
Day three began with the 1,650-yard freestyle. Kemp recorded the fastest time of the day for the Ospreys with a time of 17:53.35, while freshman Allison Troia posted a time of 18:38.08 in the event. Alexiou posted the top time for North Florida in the finals of the 200 backstroke. She was joined in the preliminaries by England and Poon. The rookie notched a time of 2:11.34. In the 100 freestyle, R. Bernard posted a time of 54.79 in the finals. Kemp, M. Bernard, Alexiou, Janowicz, Wynn and Troia each competed in the preliminaries of the 100 free. Woods and Evans finished 1-2 among North Florida swimmers in the finals of the 200 breaststroke. Woods posted a time of 2:24.48, while Evans swam a time of 2:28.01. In the finals of the 200 butterfly, Janowicz recorded a time of 2:08.79 as the top finisher of the event for UNF. The 400 freestyle relay team of M. Bernard, R. Bernard, Kemp and McCallum posted a time of 3:36.55 to finish ahead of teammates Woods, Evans, Janowicz and Alexiou in the final event of the meet.
