JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team recorded a pair of victories in a quad meet held at the UNF Aquatic Center. The Ospreys defeated Campbell, 168.00-119.00, and late addition to the meet Florida A&M, 235.00-21.00, but fell to FIU, 187.00-111.00, on Saturday afternoon.
North Florida opened the four-team meet with a tight victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The all-freshman relay team of Ellice Mae Sanchez, Bridget Woods, Lissa Janowicz and Natalie McCallum took first place in the event, winning the relay by one hundredth of a second with a time of 1:52.45.
Janowicz was the top finisher of the day for the Ospreys in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing ahead of teammates Alexis Regan and Allison Troia in the second event of the afternoon.
The third event of the day saw McCallum recording a first place finish in the 200 freestyle. The sprinter posted a time of 1:55.73 to win the even by 21-hundredths of a second. Twins Rebeca Bernard and Maria Bernard finished behind McCallum.
Sanchez and fellow freshman Kristina Alexiou finished back-to-back in the 100 backstroke, ahead of senior Gala Poon.
Freshman Bridget Woods and junior Sara Evans finished first and second, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke with Woods notching a time of 1:08.04 just ahead of Evans' 1:08.05. Junior Katie England finished the event just few seconds off of the pace.
Event number six was the 200 butterfly and saw Janowicz posting a team-best time of 2:12.15 to claim third in the event, ahead of teammate Emily Wynn.
In the 50 freestyle, M. Bernard finished just ahead of her sister R. Bernard to post the top two finishes in the event for the Ospreys. M. Bernard's time of 25.72 was three hundredths of a second better than her sister's time of 25.75.
In the one meter diving, junior Julia Moomaw posted a second place finish with a score of 222.37, while freshman Monica Rice notched a third place finish with a score of 207.15.
R. Bernard posted the best time of the day for the Ospreys with a time of 55.18 in the 100 freestyle, finishing just ahead of teammates McCallum and M. Bernard. In the 200 backstroke, Alexiou earned a third place finish with a time of 2:12.47, finishing just in front of teammate Sanchez.
Woods and Evans finished first and second, this time in the 200 breaststroke. Woods recorded a time of 2:24.27, just ahead of Evans who notched a time of 2:27.19.
Alexiou, Regan and Troia finished 1-2-3 among North Florida swimmers in the 500 freestyle, while Janowicz and Wynn were the top two finishers for the Ospreys in the 100 butterfly.
In the three meter diving competition, Moomaw once again finished in second place, posting a score of 238.20. Rice claimed third in the event with a score of 207.00.
In the final individual event of the afternoon, Evans edged out Woods in the 200 individual medley. Evans' time of 2:11.28 was less than five tenths of a second ahead of Woods' 2:11.76.
North Florida's 400 freestyle relay team of the Bernard twins, Sanchez and McCallum claimed second place with a time of 3:39.95, fighting off a late push by the Campbell relay team.
The Ospreys will be back in action on Nov. 17-19, as UNF heads to Radford, Va. for the Radford Invitational.
