
No. 22 UNF Set for NCAA Regional

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 22 University of North Florida golf team is set for the 2010 Men's Golf South Central Regional, May 20-22 at Texas A&M's Traditions Club Golf Course in Bryan, Texas. The Ospreys enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will tee off at 8:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 20.
The Traditions Club Golf Course is a Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II co-design. The 7,146-yard, par 72 championship design course opened in 2004. All three rounds can be followed on Golfstat.com.
UNF enters the three round tournament ranked 22nd in both the Golfstat index and the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. Individually for the Ospreys, sophomore Sean Dale is 19th in the Golfstat standings and 25th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
Host team Texas A&M is No. 2 in the country and holds the No. 1 seed in the tournament. No. 10/13 Texas Tech holds the No. 2 seed while No. 16/12 Georgia is the No. 3 seed. No. 25/21 TCU rounds out the list of top-25 teams that will be in the field with the No. 5 seed. Joining the top-5 teams are Pepperdine, Auburn, North Carolina, Baylor, Tulsa, Rice, Wichita State, Georgetown and Jackson State.
“We are excited to be here,” said head coach Scott Schroeder. “The facilities here at Texas A&M are great. The course will be a good challenge. If we play our game then we will be successful this week.”
The Ospreys competed in a two-round, one day tournament hosted by No. 15 Florida at the Golden Ocala Golf Club. UNF finished second in the five team tournament behind the host team and four strokes ahead of No. 11/19 Florida State. The Ospreys scored a 2-under, 574 (288-286) and were led by sophomore Byun and freshman Kevin Aylwin who tied for fifth with 3-under, 141's.
Competing for the Ospreys at NCAA regionals will be Dale, Byun, freshman Kevin Phelan and seniors Jordan Gibb and J.C. Horne.
Dale has had 12 sub-par rounds this season and finished with a season low, 66 at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate. Dale claimed the top finish at the tournament. He has finished in the top-10 five times this season. He won Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Month in September.
Byun has shot six sub-par rounds and has finished with a round low 69 three times this year including at the John Hayt Invitational where he took the tournament title.
Phelan was named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Month for March after recording four top-10 finishes during the month. He has had a team-best 15 sub-par rounds this season and has finished in the top-10 seven times. Phelan shot a season low 66 at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational where he tied for fourth.
Horne has finished strong toward the end of the season, having recorded a pair of top-5 finishes in two of his last four tournaments. He shot a season low 68 in the final round of the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate, tying for fourth and helping the Ospreys to rally to win the tournament title.
Gibb has also been strong over the past four tournaments, recording three top-5 finishes including a first place finish at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational. He tied with Horne for fourth at the BancorpSouth Tournament where he shot a season low 69. Gibb led the team with a fourth place finish at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship where the Ospreys finished third.
This is UNF's fifth NCAA regional appearance at the Division I level with the last appearance being in 2008 after claiming the A-Sun title. The golf team began competing at the DI level in 1997. Prior to that, the Ospreys went to the NCAA Division II national championships for four consecutive seasons, finishing second twice. UNF won the NAIA National Championship in 1991 and 1993.
