
No. 22 UNF Finishes Fourth at Regionals, Advances to NCAA Men’s Championships

BRYAN, Texas – After struggling in the second round, the University of North Florida golf team came out strong on the final day, shooting the lowest score of the round to finish fourth with a 5-under, 859 (280-298-281) in the 2010 NCAA South Central Regional at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. With the fourth place finish, the Ospreys advance to the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. at The Honors Course, June 1-6.
All five of UNF's golfers finished even or under par in the third round. Freshman Kevin Phelan led the Ospreys throughout the tournament and finished with an 8-under, 208 (66-72-70), tying for second. Sophomore Sean Dale finished 10th with a 3-under, 213 (71-73-69).
Senior J.C. Horne tied for 23rd, scoring a 3-over, 219 (73-75-71) while sophomore Joe Byun tied for 27th with a 4-over 220 (71-78-71). Senior Jordan Gibb rounds out the individual scoring for the Ospreys with a 9-over 225 (72-81-72), tying for 43rd.
"Kevin did a great job leading us this week," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "Today was a full team effort. Every guy shot par or better and that led us to the low round of the day. We are now looking forward to going to the NCAA Finals."
Also advancing from the South Central Regional are No. 10/13 Texas Tech, No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 25/21 TCU and Baylor. Texas Tech finished first with a 13-under 851 (282-284-285). Texas A&M was second with a 12-under, 852 (277-288-287) while TCU was third with a 6-under, 858 (277-291-290). Baylor won a playoff against Georgia to break the tie and advance as the fifth place team with a 5-over, 869 (291-289-289).
UNF is currently 22nd in both the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and the Golfstat.com Index. Dale is 19th in the Golfstat Index and 25th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
Twenty-five teams advanced from the other regionals including Washington, USC, San Diego, Oregon State and Illinois from the West. From the Southwest, Oregon, Augusta State, Cal, Tennessee and UNLV advanced. Oklahoma State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Arizona State and Georgia Southern advanced from the Southeast Regional. From the Central Regional Stanford, Florida State, Florida, Duke and LSU finished in the top five to advance. The East Regional had Texas, Kent State, UCLA, Penn State and Virginia advancing.
The Honors Course is a par-72, 7,260 yard course created in 1983 to honor the game of amateur golf.
