BRASELTON, Ga. – The University of North Florida men's golf team completed play in the 2010 Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship at the Legends at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. with a third place finish.
The Ospreys, who started the day in second place, slipped back into third place despite senior Jordan Gibb's 1-under 71 which helped him finish in a tie for fourth overall. Gibb started the day off with an even par score on the front nine. The senior was two shots over par through 15 holes, but posted back-to-back-to-back birdies to finish the round under par.
“Today was a weird day for us,” said head coach Scott Schroeder. “We got off to a slow start, but regained our momentum in the middle of the front nine. We then really struggled badly for a stretch, but finally finished really strong. To finish third was not what we wanted, but the guys competed hard and that is all I can ask. Jordan had another good finish for us. The good news after this disappointment is that we still have regionals to look forward to down the road.”
No. 31 East Tennessee State won the tournament with a combined score of five-under par, 859. Florida Gulf Coast made a charge on the final day of competition to overtake the Ospreys and finish in second place. The Eagles closed to within two strokes of the team lead late in the final round.
ETSU earns the conference's automatic bid into NCAA Regional play while UNF expects to receive an at-large selection when the NCAA Championship field is announced on Monday, May 10.
Aside from Gibb's fourth place finish, North Florida had three other golfers finish in the top 20. Freshman Kevin Phelan and sophomore Joe Byun each finished the tournament in a tie for 12th place. After a second round of 69, Phelan stumbled on the final round to turn in a scorecard of 79. Byun shot an even round of par, 72, in the third round to finish the tournament four-over par.
Senior J.C. Horne finished just two strokes behind Phelan and Byun to conclude the championship in a tie for 19th place. Horne carded a final round of 75, finishing the tournament at six-over par.
Rounding out the scoring for the Ospreys was Kevin Aylwin. The sophomore shaved four strokes off of his second round score to card a final round of 75. Aylwin finished the tournament in a tie for 32nd.
