JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's golf team is set for the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golf Championship, beginning Monday, April 19 on the Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
The Ospreys enter the three round tournament ranked 20th in both the Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. UNF won its first A-Sun Golf Championship in 2008 on the Woodlands Course at Chateau Elan. The Ospreys are the highest ranked team entering into the championship and have spent the enter season ranked among the nation's top programs. UNF has recorded a pair of wins during the spring season, claiming first at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational and at the BancorpSouth Invitational.
In their last outing, the Ospreys rallied back to win the BancorpSouth Invitational after being down seven strokes following the second round. UNF defeated Florida by one stroke with an 18-under 846 (286-282-278). Seniors J.C. Horne and Jordan Gibb led the Ospreys as they finished tied for fourth with 5-under 211's. Freshman Kevin Phelan, who recently won the A-Sun Golf of the Month honors for March, also finished in the top-10 with a ninth place, 2-under 214.
Joining Horne, Gibb and Phelan in the line-up for the Ospreys are sophomores Joe Byun and Kevin Aylwin. Byun won the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational earlier in the season, leading the Ospreys to the team title as well.
“The golf course is a real good test for our team,” said head coach Scott Schroeder. “The team is playing real well, so we are looking forward to seeing what we can do.”
East Tennessee State also enters the tournament ranked in top-30 nationally. ETSU has claimed the individual title each of the past three years, including current members Seamus Power and Michael Stewart.
Campbell, is the defending Atlantic Sun champions. The Camels return last season's A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Vaita Guillaume.
All 11 members of the Atlantic Sun will be represented at the championship, including Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate. Both teams are in their reclassification process into NCAA Division I status.
The Legends is a private golf club located within the Chateau Elan Community. Unique in design, The Legends at Chateau Elan was crafted from the worldly experience of three great golfing champions: Gene Sarazen, Kathy Whitworth and Sam Snead. These champions lent their expertise during “on site” visits to help architect Denis Griffiths build one of top ranked courses in Georgia. The Legends was the home of the Sarazen World Open Championship, a PGA Tour event from 1994 through 1998 to honor Gene Sarazen.
As part of a multi-year agreement with the Gwinnett Sports Commission, the Men's Championship will remain at Chateau Elan through 2012. The Chateau Course serves as the venue in 2011. The Woodlands Course, which hosted in 2008, will be the site in 2012.
Play begins at 8 a.m. Monday off of holes No. 1 and No. 10. Fans can follow the action at Golfstat.com.
