JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team boasted a five-run seventh inning against Akron (6-2) to win 6-2 and a 10-2 win topping Jacksonville State in game two of the Buzz Classic.
“Our team has really come together these past few games,” said head coach Marcie Hickey. “Hitters are starting to step-up and our pinch-hitters are coming through in the clutch. It just seems like the whole team is on and everyone is doing their part.”
In the first game, Akron's pitcher Heather Bauer sent the Ospreys (6-13) down in order for the first three innings, but in the fourth, UNF broke the tie 1-0. In the top of the fourth, shortstop Britanie Block led the inning off with a base hit to left center. Akron's centerfielder committed a throwing error, allowing Block to advance to second. Ariana Godwin, batting second in the lineup for only the fourth time this season, moved Block to third, setting up senior Kara Rutenbar's two out RBI.
The Zips tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when Bauer helped her cause with a base hit that would end sophomore Shaina Dent's afternoon. Senior pitcher Devyn Findley (5-7) went the rest of the way not allowing an earned run.
The Zips scored an unearned run to take a 2-1 lead after six. An Akron error gave UNF new life, and two walks, a double, and two singles fueled the Ospreys' five run inning and second win in a row.
That would only be the start to the Ospreys' day offensively. Against the Gamecocks, North Florida continued to make good contact, especially freshman Jackie Reese, who had a career day, going 2-for-4, with two runs, two RBI and her first career homerun, belted out to straight-away centerfield. In the first inning, the Ospreys scored four unearned runs on two Jacksonville State errors. The Gamecocks would comit three errors on the night.
Dent (1-6) recorded her first win of the season in her 4 1/3 innings pitched; she gave up only two runs and three hits on the night. After Dent was relieved, Findley would shut the Gamecocks down the rest of the night. In the bottom of the sixth with Rutenbar on base, Reese hit a two-run homerun, followed by third baseman Alyson Bailey crossing the plate on Godwin's RBI walk. The Ospreys dismantled Jacksonville State pitcher Hillary Phillips, who gave up nine runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
North Florida will be back in action for the last day of the classic tomorrow when they take on Bowling Green at 9 a.m.
