
Ospreys to Battle JU in A-Sun Semifinals

MACON, Ga. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team will face crosstown rival Jacksonville on Friday, March 5 in the semifinal round of the 2010 General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball Championship in Macon, Ga. Tip-off is slated for 2:30 p.m. at the University Center on the campus of Mercer University.
UNF (11-19, 7-13 A-Sun) is coming off an impressive 55-40 win over host team Mercer in the first round. The Ospreys were led by sophomore guard Brittany Kirkland who tied a career-high with 25 points. Junior guard Juliemay Syquio and freshman forward Jadhken Kerr tallied 11 points each. Kerr along with senior forward Arlande Cherizol led the team with eight rebounds each.
JU (10-19, 8-12 A-Sun) defeated Campbell, 52-46 in the opening round to advance. Gigi Thomas had 23 points for the Dolphins while Desarae Johnson grabbed nine boards.
The Ospreys and Dolphins split on the season with each team winning on its respective home court. Kirkland averaged 20.5 points against the Dolphins this season after turning in a 25 point performance on the road in the 64-58 overtime loss at Swisher. She followed that up with a 16 point performance at in the 58-50 win at UNF Arena. Syquio added 14 points on the road and Cherizol pulled down 18 rebounds. At home Kerr grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and knocked down eight points.
Ashanti Williams poured in 17 points. Courtney Jackson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Crystal Grable added 13 points for the Dolphins at JU. In the return game at UNF Arena, Drameka Griggs tallied 23 points.
Kirkland leads the Ospreys on the season, averaging 14.6 points per game. Syquio is adding 8.8 points while dishing out 3.9 assists per game. Kerr is tallying 8.5 points per game and Cherizol is grabbing a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game.
The Dolphins are led by Courtney Jackson with 8.9 points per game on the season. Griggs is averaging 8.6 overall, but 10.4 in Atlantic Sun action. Desarae Johnson is grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game. JU holds the 8-2 advantage in the all-time series.
