JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Devyn Findley picked up two wins in the University of North Florida softball team's sweep of Florida Gulf Coast, extending its winning streak to five. The Ospreys won the first game 2-1 and pulled out the second game 4-2 with the help of sophomore Shaina Dent's RBI triple.
The Ospreys (17-18, 3-1 A-Sun) are within one game of .500 after winning the past five games on their quest to the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
In the first game Findley (13-9) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits and whiffing 11. After the Eagles (15-21, 4-2 A-Sun) used the long ball to sweep the Dolphins last week, the Ospreys were able to shutdown FGCU with superb pitching and timely hitting.
“Both of our pitchers threw the ball well and our hitters stepped up when the game was on the line,” said head coach Marcie Hickey. “Shaina as well as Devyn helped us out offensively, especially with Shaina's triple to score the go-ahead run.”
In the first game left-handed pitcher Findley was the hero driving in both runs in the first inning. The Alachua, Fla. native went 2-for-6 on the day and had three RBI. Findley hit sophomore Amanda Moseley and junior Caroline Torre in on a double to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh the Eagles put up a fight to tie the game, loading the bases with two base-hits and a walk. FGCU lead-off hitter recorded the Eagles' first run of the night on a RBI walk.
With two outs and the bases loaded Findley came back in the inning with a game ending strikeout to sit Eagles' shortstop down for the second time in the game.
In the second game, Dent got the nod to start, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing one unearned run. In addition to her efforts in the circle, Dent also made her mark at the plate.
In Dent's first at-bat she recorded her first career hit to the first base side. Dent not only got her first career hit in this game but punched-in the Ospreys' go-ahead run in extra innings.
Entering the bottom of the seventh tied 2-2 the Ospreys relied on their pitcher Findley to hold the Eagles scoreless and give the Ospreys' offense a chance to break the tie in the eighth.
In a day of firsts, Dent registered her first career RBI in the top of the eighth with a triple belted to right center field, driving in freshman Stephanie McAdam and putting the Ospreys up 3-2. Dent finished the game going 3-for-4, with one RBI and a run scored.
The Ospreys scored again for the two-run lead halting the Eagles' chances of their fifth win in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
