JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team scored 22 runs against James Madison and needed every one as the Ospreys outlasted the Dukes, 22-19, on Friday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
The two teams combined for 41 runs on 39 hits, including eight home runs and 10 doubles. Six different Osprey players recorded multi-hit games, while five batters for the Dukes had two or more hits.
Senior Preston Hale and junior Andrew Hannon each finished the game 4-for-6. Hannon hit two home runs, scored three runs and drove in a career-high seven runs, while Hale scored three runs and drove in another.
Sophomore Andrew Karmeris, senior Justin Preckajlo and senior T.J. Thompson each added home runs for UNF. Sophomore Steve Hillan and freshman Ryan Roberson each added three hits apiece. Hillan led all Ospreys with four runs scored.
On the mound, North Florida used five pitchers, who scattered 18 hits over nine innings. The Ospreys surrendered 19 runs – 13 earned runs – with 10 walks and seven strikeouts. Starting pitcher George Lott led all pitchers with four strikeouts and senior John Atteo picked up the win in relief – his first of the season.
James Madison was the first to scratch the scoreboard with an unearned run in the first inning. After two quick outs, an error by UNF extended the inning. A balk, single through the left side gave JMU runners on the corners. Back-to-back walks plated a runner and saw the Ospreys behind 1-0.
In the second inning, the Dukes added a pair of runs. With two runners on and two outs, a fly ball to right managed to drop in for a two-RBI single despite a sliding effort by Hale.
Trailing 3-0, the Ospreys tied the score with a three-run second inning. Preckajlo hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season to give UNF its first run of the game. With two outs, hit his fourth double of the season to extend the inning. A single to left center field by Hillan moved Roberson to third and Hillan advanced to second the throw home. Hannon tied the game with a two-RBI single to left center field.
The Dukes regained the lead in the top of the third inning. James Madison's lead off batter drove a 0-2 pitch over the left center field fence to put the visitors in front 4-3.
The Ospreys took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a six-run inning. Back-to-back singles by Hale and Karmeris gave UNF a pair of base runners. A walk to Preckajlo loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice allowed the first run of the inning and Karmeris came around to score as the Dukes tried to turn a double play and the throw was off the mark. Thompson extended the lead with a two-run home run to right field. Hillan singled and moved into scoring position by stealing third base. He advanced to third on a balk by the JMU pitcher, but it would not matter as Andrew Hannon hit his first home run of the season to give the Ospreys a 9-4 lead.
James Madison got a run back in the top of the fourth inning. Back-to-back one-out walks, coupled with a double steal gave JMU a pair of runners in scoring position. A third walk of the inning loaded the bases, and a line drive recorded the second out of the inning. A wild pitch scored the lead runner, but the Ospreys escaped the threat with an inning-ending strikeout.
The Ospreys extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a second six-run inning. The inning was highlighted by a solo home run by Karmersis and a three-run homer by Hannon.
The two teams each posted two runs in the sixth inning and the Dukes cut into the Osprey lead with a four-run seven inning to cut the lead to 17-11. UNF responded with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 22-11 lead.
UNF survived a scare in the top of the ninth as James Madison posted a rally. When the dust settled, the Dukes scored eight runs on seven hits and a costly UNF error.
North Florida returns to action with a pair of games in the Kennel Club Classic on Saturday, March 13. The Ospreys open the day against Illinois State at 1 p.m. before taking on James Madison at 4 p.m.
