Mercadante Inks Contract Extension Through 2030 Season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida Baseball Head Coach Joe Mercadante has agreed to a multi-year contract extension through the 2030 season, as announced by Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Nick Morrow on Wednesday.
"Coach Mercadante has elevated our baseball program to a championship level through his leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence," Morrow said. "He has built a program rooted in accountability, hard work and a team-first mentality that has positioned North Florida Baseball for sustained success. Just as importantly, Joe has managed every aspect of the program the right way, developing young men of character while fostering a competitive environment that allows our student-athletes to thrive both on and off the field. We are incredibly proud of what has been accomplished under his leadership, and we're excited to extend his contract as we continue building on that momentum and pursuing even greater success for Osprey Baseball."

Mercadante was tabbed as the fourth head coach in North Florida Baseball history on June 23, 2023. In three seasons at the helm, Mercadante has compiled an overall record of 79-83-1 with a 48-40-1 record in ASUN Conference play.
Mercadante has led North Florida to a remarkable turnaround in just three seasons. Following a 21-30-1 record in his first season, the Ospreys improved to 27-29 and earned a conference tournament berth in his second. North Florida excelled in year three under Mercadante, claiming a 31-24 record and the No. 1 overall seed in the ASUN Tournament with a conference-best 22-8 mark in ASUN play.
Since 2024, Mercadante has developed one First Team, four Second Team and four Third Team All-ASUN selections, in addition to five ASUN All-Freshman Team selections.
Most recently in 2026, Mercadante was named ASUN Coach of the Year, captured the ASUN Graphite Division title and led North Florida to its most single-season conference wins since the program's Division I inception in 2006.
Under Mercadante's guidance last season, North Florida tallied its highest single season win total since 2019. Mercadante led North Florida to a .733 win percentage in conference play in 2026, marking the program's best since 2015 (.762).
With Mercadante's tutelage, North Florida won 12 out of 14 weekend series, all eight of its home series and nine out of 10 ASUN series last season. North Florida's 2026 squad tallied the program's most ASUN series wins since its Division I inception in 2006.
In year three under Mercadante, North Florida secured four series sweeps, seven run-rule victories and secured series wins over all five ASUN opponents he faced.
Under Mercadante's leadership, North Florida's pitching staff experienced immense success in 2026. North Florida led the ASUN in shutouts and allowed the fewest hits per nine innings in the conference. The Ospreys finished with the second-lowest team ERA in the ASUN last season and ranked second in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings, walks allowed per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio, WHIP and win-loss percentage.
Mercadante's third season leading the program resulted in North Florida winning its first six conference series to open ASUN play for the first time since 2013. With Mercadante's leadership, North Florida won six consecutive series in conference play for the first time since 2015.
For the first time in program history, Mercadante signed a top 50 (No. 46, according to Perfect Game) recruiting class in the nation on Dec. 1, 2025.
Mercadante helped produce North Florida's 53rd MLB Draft pick in program history when redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Dakota Stone was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 12.
Following his second season at North Florida in 2025, Mercadante guided UNF outfielder Nick Monile to an undrafted free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Mercadante is a 2003 graduate of the University of Florida, where he earned a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports sciences. Mercadante played two seasons at UF and in 2002, posted a .471 batting average across 21 games. He earned a master's degree in exercise and sports sciences from Florida in 2006.
Mercadante and his wife, Katie, have two sons, Roman and CT.
