JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team pushed two runs across in the seventh inning and had the tying runs on base before falling short, 4-2, against Villanova on the final day of the UCF Invitational.
Sophomore Shaina Dent (0-4) threw a scoreless first three innings, recording five strikeouts to keep Villanova off the scoreboard early. But the Wildcats responed with a three-run fourth inning, courtesy of Villanova first baseman Mallory Manning's three-run homerun.
Manning came up in the top of the inning with runners on first and second as a result of a hit by pitch and a single.
Dent would go another two innings before being relieved by senior Devyn Findley after allowing Manning to drive in the Wildcats final run of the game.
Through four innings of play the Ospreys (2-10-0) were not able to muster a hit, until the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Britanie Block hit a double to left center. But she would be left on base as UNF stranded nine runners in the game.
In the seventh inning
Freshman Molly Grubb started the inning off with a walk, that was followed by a base hit bunt. Sophomore Britanie Block then moved the runners over to second and third for junior Caroline Torre's sacrifice fly, scoring the Ospreys' first run of the day. After Torre's RBI to centerfield, Findley would come through with a single to leftfield for her seventh RBI of the season.
With two runners on base for UNF and two outs, Villanova's pitcher Caitlyn Delahaba (2-1) would close out the game for her second win of the season.
The Ospreys will now travel back to
