TAMPA, Fla. – Sparked by a pair of Top 10 finishers and the low team score of the final round, the University of North Florida golf team surged to a third-place finish Sunday at the 2010 Gary Koch Invitational held at Old Memorial Golf Club.
UNF fired a final round 285 en route to a 54-hole tally of two-over-par 866. The Ospreys led the 12-team tournament field recording 182 pars during the weekend on the par 72, 7,389-yard layout. The University of Virginia swept the event titles capturing the team crown at 849 (-15) while Ben Kohles earned medalist honors with a nine-under 207.
Sophomore Kevin Phelan (T-5th) and junior Kevin Aylwin (T-8th) both finished among the Top 10 in leading the Ospreys' final round surge. On Sunday, Phelan carded a two-under 70 finishing with a tournament total 212 (-4) while Aylwin, who collected a career-best tournament total, posted a 213 (-3) including an even-par 72 on the final day.
Junior Joe Byun matched teammate Phelan with a team-best 70 in the final round and finished tied for 24th at 219. Seniors Chris Kennedy (224, T-35th) and Jacob Davidson (227, T-44th) rounded out the UNF line-up for the event. Junior Major Forbess finished tied for 38th (225) playing as an individual.
“We played really well today and ended up earning a solid finish,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “I thought both Kevins had strong weekends and I look forward to more performances like this one. We have a quick turnaround this week so we need to get refocused and ready for our next event.”
In the team competition, the Cavaliers boasted a 15-stroke advantage over runner-up Auburn (858). UNF was third followed by UNC Greensboro (868), Florida State (870), MTSU (874), Coastal Carolina (877), College of Charleston (882), Georgia Southern (884), North Carolina (886), Kentucky (894) and South Florida (919).
North Florida continues its fall tournament slate Oct. 8-10 at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga.
