JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team battled the Radford Highlanders along with the cold and came away with a 141-82 victory on Saturday night at the UNF Aquatic Center. The win improves the team to 5-2 in dual meets.
With the temperature outside dipping into the 20's and the temperature of the pool at 74-degrees, UNF claimed first place in all 13 events on the day, sweeping eight of the 11 swimming events.
The Ospreys claimed the top three spots in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay. The 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle were exhibitioned as the meet had already been won by UNF.
“Despite the cold air and the cold water, the girls swam really well,” head coach Beth Harrell commented after the meet. “That is a good sign for our target next weekend to have a good quad-meet. They have been practicing extremely well despite some pool problems. Radford gave us some good competition, but we came away with a win which is always fun.”
Leading the charge for the Ospreys in the meet was true freshman Sara Evans. The Lynn Haven, Fla. native swam the second leg of the 200-yard medley relay that finished first, as well as, taking first in the 200 individual medley. Her time in the 200 breaststroke was good enough to win by nearly three seconds, but as the meet was already determined she exhibitioned the event.
“Sara Evans did a good job,” Harrell continued. “She had some really good swims for this time of year. Kelsey Bobzien said her backstroke was really good for this time of year. Our freshmen have swam really well all year and I think they have challenged the upper classmen in a lot of ways. They have been training well and it all came together tonight. We mixed up events so some people got excited about swimming some events they had not swam in a while.”
Bobzien took first place in the 100 backstroke on her 19th birthday with a time of 1:00.80. She same the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay that was exhibitioned that finished with a race-best time of 1:41.80.
Junior Megan Boudreau (1,000 freestyle, 100 freestyle), junior Lyn Ann Nelson (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle), and junior Taylor Crosby (100 butterfly) also posted victories on the night. In addition, true freshman Julia Moomaw won the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
North Florida will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16, as the swimming and diving team heads to Statesboro, Ga. for a quad-meet against host Georgia Southern, Florida Gulf Coast and Gardner-Webb.
