The UNF swimming and diving team heads to Statesboro, Ga. for a quad-meet
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team hits the road for a quad-meet on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 15-16, in Statesboro, Ga. The Ospreys will compete against meet-host Georgia Southern, as well as, Florida Gulf Coast and Gardner-Webb.
“Swimming three conference teams all at one time is quite a challenge,” head coach Beth Harrell commented. “All three of the teams finished ahead of us in conference meet last year. We beat Georgia Southern in a meet earlier this year so we want to be able to repeat that. We haven't been able to swim against Gardner-Webb during the season for the past couple of seasons. Florida Gulf Coast we swam earlier this year and they defeated us.
“It is a big challenge for us. It is very exciting to have a big portion of our conference in the pool together at the same time. It will give us a good picture of what we need to do five weeks from now at the conference meet. I expect the races to be good. The rivalries are great and I expect to see some fast swimming.”
The Ospreys enter the weekend coming off of a 141-82 victory over Radford on Saturday, Jan. 9. The win improved UNF to 5-2 overall in dual meets.
With the temperature outside dipping into the 20's and the temperature of the pool at 74-degrees, UNF claimed first place in all 13 events against Radford, sweeping eight of the 11 swimming events. The Ospreys claimed the top three spots in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relay. The 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle were exhibitioned as the meet had already been won by UNF.
North Florida's Sara Evans was named the CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week, while UNF's Julia Moomaw was named the CCSA Women's Diver of the Week for their performances against Radford.
Earlier in the season, UNF edged Georgia Southern, 149-141, in a tri-meet with College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. on Oct. 24, 2009. In addition, the Ospreys fell 181.5-116.5 to Florida Gulf Coast at the UNF Aquatic Center on Nov. 11, 2009. The last time North Florida swam against Gardner-Webb outside of the conference meet was on Jan. 27, 2007, at the UNF Aquatic Center with the Bulldogs coming away with a 195-152 victory.
