JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team won its second match in a row as they downed Georgia Southern, 4-1, Friday night at the Jacksonville University Invitational on the campus of JU.
The Ospreys will wrap up JU Invite play vs. Furman on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Noon.
Seniors Elena Luzins and Katelin Swift each tallied a goal and freshman Michele Larrinaga added two as UNF notched its first winning streak of the season and second consecutive four-goal match.
The Ospreys (2-2) have scored 11 goals in four matches, a feat that took nine matches to accomplish just a season ago.
UNF maintained pressure on the Eagles (0-4) the whole match shooting the ball 15 times compared to Georgia Southern's five and attempting 11 corners to Georgia Southern's 2. Through their dominance on corner kicks UNF was able to score a pair goals.
In the 22nd minute the Ospreys put their first goal on the board with Luzins' corner from the right side that took an Osprey bend into the back corner of the neck.
“After we scored the first goal it really put us in a good position,” said Head Coach Linda Hamilton. “We settled down as a team and played with real confidence from there on out.”
Larrinaga was able to finish the night with two goals, with her second coming off a corner kick from sophomore forward Sadie McLean. On the corner, Larrinaga was able to dispossess the ball from the defender and connect with the net in the bottom right corner. The Tampa, Fla. native's two goals gives her four goals on the season, tying teammate Swift for the team lead.
In the 60th minute, Swift was able to show her ball skills, making a clean dribble around the Eagles defense and keeper to finish up UNF's counter attack. Senior Kristin Rhodes recorded the assist.
In the 62nd minute, Eagles forward Jenny Anderson was able to sneak past UNF's defense and score the Eagles first and only goal of the match. Soon after, senior Rachael Howard made an incredible save denying Eagle midfielder Kate Boardman who attacked from 15 yards out on the left side.
“Though we scored four goals we need to do a better job in closing out games,” said Hamilton. “I will have to look at the film and figure out what happened on defense but overall I'm happy about how well we played tonight.”
