UNF hosts two matches this weekend then visits Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Needing to bounce back from a rough road trip, the University of North Florida women's tennis team will cap its home and Atlantic Sun Conference schedules with a pair of contests at the UNF Tennis Complex and a SunTrust River City Rumble bout.
Schedule
UNF (12-4, 6-2 A-Sun) vs. Campbell (11-7, 3-3) – Friday, April 3 – 2 p.m.
UNF vs. UCF (9-9) – Saturday, April 4 – Noon
UNF vs. Jacksonville (8-9, 4-4) – Tuesday, April 7 – 2 p.m.
Inside the Matchups
Campbell will be on the road for the first time in seven matches when it visits the UNF Tennis Complex Friday afternoon. The Camels went 4-2 in their six-match homestand that began with a pair of 7-0 wins against Lafayette and Mount Olive on March 17. East Tennessee State and USC Upstate dealt Campbell its losses by the same margin before the Camels tallied two wins against Lipscomb and Belmont over the weekend.
The Knights snapped their four-match losing streak in their last outing by defeating Louisiana-Lafayette at home 4-3 on Friday. Before the skid, UCF won three straight, including wins at Tulane and at home against Penn State. Playing primarily at the No. 6 position, Katie Orletsky holds the team's best singles record in dual action with a 12-4 mark. UCF hosts Jacksonville Wednesday.
After its visit to UCF, Jacksonville will host Campbell Friday and then wrap up its regular season slate against the Lady Ospreys on April 7. The Dolphins have slid in their last three league matches, including a 4-3 loss at Upstate and a 4-0 loss at ETSU. JU is 5-3 on its own court this season with losses to Tennessee-Martin, Stetson and Kennesaw State – three opponents UNF defeated handily.
Looking Back
The Lady Ospreys suffered their first two losses in A-Sun play over the weekend, falling at East Tennessee State and USC Upstate. UNF dropped three places in the league standings down to fourth with the two defeats. ETSU handed UNF a 4-0 decision, and Upstate outlasted the Lady Ospreys by winning the third set of the No. 6 match for a 4-3 victory.
At home, UNF has racked up a 9-0 record with no competitor coming closer than a 5-2 outcome. Four times this season the Lady Ospreys have blanked their opponent at the UNF Tennis Complex.
With two more wins in the past week, sophomore doubles pair Lauren Holton and Victoria Krook improved to 16-0 and stayed in the national ranks but slipped three spots to No. 67. The duo clinched two 8-5 wins against ETSU and Upstate, helping the Lady Ospreys sweep the doubles point at Upstate.
Who's Hot
In March, junior Raquel Castro finished with a 9-1 record, including a win in her only try at the top singles spot. She also tallied an 8-2 doubles record playing with freshman Aline Berkenbrock. Castro boasts a 13-3 record on the year with all three losses coming at the No. 2 position. In three-set matches this season she is 3-0 and has totaled 10 straight-set victories.
Castro leads all A-Sun participants at the No. 2 singles position with her 11-3 mark in that slot. Besides Stetson's Breanna Atkinson, who is 10-6 on the season, Castro leads the next closest competitor by four victories.
Did you hear?
Head coach Rodrigo Puebla on last weekend's results: “We've worked all season toward winning the conference title, and the two results over the weekend pushes us off that target. We went into the weekend leading the conference and now sit in fourth place.
Puebla on finishing the A-Sun slate: “Last weekend was tough on the team, but I expect the girls to be ready to go this weekend and finish conference play strong. We can still finish in the top three, which would be a great step toward competing for a conference title after being picked to finish fifth before the season began.”
Puebla on the Campbell and UCF matchups: “Friday's match against Campbell is huge for us to regain some confidence and is the next step toward finishing our home schedule undefeated. UCF is one of the top programs in the state and the region, and they will be a very big test for us.”
Puebla on the SunTrust River City Rumble matchup: “It doesn't matter who has what record when we play against JU, it is always a tough match. The girls that are in their first season at UNF already know how intense the match will be and have heard the other players talk all season about how big the rivalry is.”
