UNF moved to a perfect 10-0 at home with a 5-2 win against Campbell
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team bounced back from its first two Atlantic Sun Conference losses by netting its seventh conference win and 10th home win of the season Friday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex against Campbell, 5-2.
“We had a great crowd today, which gave us a big boost and created a great environment,” UNF head coach Rodrigo Puebla said. “Our marketing department and the International Center did a great job of promoting International Day and making it a big success. Everyone involved chipped in and helped us to a win that increases our confidence after a disappointing weekend on the road.”
The Lady Ospreys upped their overall record to 13-4 while improving to 7-2 in league action and remaining unbeaten on their home courts. Campbell dropped to 11-8 and slipped under the even mark in A-Sun play at 3-4.
After wrapping up a doubles point that was headlined by nationally-ranked No. 67 sophomore pair Lauren Holton and Victoria Krook opening the match with an 8-1 No. 3 doubles win, UNF sprinted to a 3-1 lead off straight set wins at the top two singles positions by freshman Aline Berkenbrock and Raquel Castro.
Berkenbrock returned the first singles result – a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Blanca Saenz – while Castro took the first set 6-1 before sweeping through the second set.
The Camels notched their first win in the fourth slot when Cristina Garcia defeated senior Ina Durcakova in straight sets. Campbell's only other point happened with the match decided at the No. 3 spot.
“I think we took them a little lightly today, and we played our opponent's game in several matches,” Puebla said. “We fell in two matches, but we also stepped up in some big spots to finish matches tight matches and earn valuable points.”
Krook closed her match and clinched the Lady Osprey win, playing at No. 5. She squeaked by Anais Gomar in the first set 7-5 and then rolled to a 6-1 finishing-set win. Krook now boasts a 14-1 record in individual action this season and a 17-0 doubles record with Holton.
The Lady Ospreys' perfect home record will be put to one final test Saturday when they close out their home slate against UCF on senior day at noon.
“UCF has a roster full of good players, and they are a solid squad,” Puebla said. “We want to play well in front our fans one more time and hold on to our unbeaten home record, and we really must step up to do so.”
