JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After dropping a 1-0 decision on Friday night, the University of North Florida men's soccer team rebounded with a season-best four goals to cruise to an easy 4-2 victory over USC Upstate on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Hodges Stadium.
“This has been the story of our year,” head coach Ray Bunch commented after the match. “When we've had our back against the wall, we have responded well. Our backs were against the wall today and we needed this win. We just need to play the rest of the season this way. We can't let down. I am quite proud of them. I thought there were some beautiful goals today.”
The Ospreys never trailed in the contest, scoring a goal in the 23rd minute of the match to take an early lead. Sophomore Theo Fulger picked up a ball off of a free kick and placed it in the bottom right corner of the goal for his first goal of the season.
In the 32nd minute of the match, USC Upstate knotted the score at 1-1. The Spartans' Maurice Beggs collected a loose ball off of a corner kick and put it in the top of the goal for the score.
The match did not stay tied for long as senior captain Matthew Hollyoak sent a pass from midfield ahead to freshman Greg Crowell, who finished the play with a goal in the top left corner of the net to give UNF a 2-1 lead before halftime.
Leading 2-1 in the second half, the Ospreys padded its lead with a goal in the 61st minute. Hollyoak sent a free kick in front of the goal for junior Adam O'Neill. O'Neill collected the pass and scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give UNF a 3-1 advantage.
USC Upstate answered with a goal in the 67th minute of the match. Timo Foerster scored a goal off of a free kick from about 10 feet outside of the box to cut the UNF lead to 3-2.
The Spartans would get no closer as freshman Calvin Lowe beat his man for a break away, forcing a one-on-one match-up with the goalie, won by Lowe.
North Florida returns to the field on Thursday, Oct. 29, as they head to Buies Creek, N.C. for a conference match against Campbell. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
