UNF’s men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to Campbell on Thursday night
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida's men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Campbell on Thursday, Oct. 29, at the the Eakes Athletic Complex in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Camels (7-8-1, 6-1-1 Atlantic Sun) scored a quick goal, but the Ospreys (3-11-1, 3-4-1 A-Sun) were able to match it and tie the score at 1-1, but a pair of second half goals by Campbell proved to be too much as UNF fell by two.
“I am very proud of the guys,” stated head coach Ray Bunch. “I thought we did well and got back into the match after falling behind early. I thought we played well. They got two quick goals which hurt us, but I thought we gave them a good match.”
With the win, Campbell secures the top seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, while North Florida will look to secure its spot in the A-Sun Tournament against Mercer on Saturday night.
The Camels wasted little time, scoring in the first 64 seconds of the match as Austin Skakle played a pass down the right flank. Keegan Terry sent a low cross into the box and Pat Danford's volley hit the left side of the net for his third goal of the year.
Campbell nearly doubled the lead in the 24th minute. UNF defender Kevin Ramirez was sent off for a foul on Vince Petrasso in the area. However, the Ospreys' sophomore goalkeeper Jullian Beau saved the penalty kick from Mitchell Cardenas to keep UNF within one goal.
North Florida drew level in the 57th minute when senior Frank Dinzey's cross found freshman Calvin Lowe unmarked at the far post for his third goal of the year.
The Ospreys nearly went in front just two minutes later through Adam O'Neill, whose right-footed shot was headed for the top corner, but Camel keeper Ted Awana stretched to make his only save of the night.
Sophomore defender Kevin Orozco put the Camels in front in the 62nd minute and Campbell added an insurance goal in the 70th minute.
North Florida closes out the Atlantic Sun Conference season with a match at Mercer on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m.
