UNF will compete against College of Charleston and Georgia Southern
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team heads to Charleston, S.C. for a tri-meet against the College of Charleston and Georgia Southern on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m.
“We have some stiff competition this weekend,” head coach Beth Harrell commented. “Swimming against two conference teams at the same time can be difficult. You may want to pick one strategy for one team and another strategy for the other, but you have to prepare for both. However, I feel like our girls are swimming really well right now and I know they are looking forward to getting back in the pool and competing. It should be a good meet.”
The meet will be the second regular season meet for the Ospreys this season. UNF opened the season with a 126-25 win over Florida A&M on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Morcom Aquatics Center on the Florida State campus.
Senior Emily Shaw was tabbed the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Women's Swimmer of the Week for her efforts against the Rattlers. Shaw claimed three first-place finishes in the meet. In the 200 medley relay, she swam the first leg, posting a split time of 29.57 and leading the team to a combined time of 1:55.45. Shaw also swam the 200 free, winning the event with a time of 1:59.86. She closed her day with a first-place finish in the 100 free swimming a 55.52 to win the event by over a second.
In addition to the meet against FAMU, the Ospreys hosted an exhibition meet against its alumni on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the UNF Aquatic Center.
Last season, North Florida had success against both College of Charleston and Georgia Southern during the regular season.
The Ospreys posted a 161-76 final score against the Cougars, taking first place in all but one event and claiming both first and second in five events. Junior Lyn Ann Nelson posted a stellar performance in the meet against the College of Charleston last season, claiming three individual first place finishes, highlighted by a UNF record-breaking performance in the 1,000 freestyle (10:30.24).
Against the Eagles last year, UNF defeated Georgia Southern, 177-119, in its final home meet of the year. Nelson broke her UNF record in the 1,000 free for the third-straight meet, clocking in at 10:23.40. Nelson also took first in the 100 free with a then season-best time of 53.22 and was the top finisher in the 500 free with a season-best time at that point of 5:06.74.
