UNF extends non-conference win streak to four
WICHITA, Kan. - After taking the doubles point against Arkansas-Little Rock, the University of North Florida men's tennis team was able to pull out a down to the wire 4-3 match with three singles wins on Saturday at the Wichita State Shocker Invitational.
"The team competed very well today," said head tennis coach Igal Buberman. "We started doubles with a lot of intensity, knowing that the match was going to be close and that we would need that point. The top guys took care of business and everyone stayed in the match and fought hard to the end. Kurt did a good job of closing it at No. 5, but Adrian pushed No. 6 all the way to the end, and that helped to take some pressure off Kurt. Wichita State tomorrow will be our toughest test, and we look forward to it."
UNF (9-5) got much needed wins out of the team of senior Eduardo Pereira and sophomore Kurt Gattiker at No. 2 doubles and junior Javier Ferrin and freshman Adrian Escarate at No. 3 doubles to pick up the point.
Gattiker picked up another win at No. 5 singles in a closely contested match. He took the first set 6-4 before falling in the second 3-6. But in the end, Gattiker dug deep and clinched the third set 6-4.
Both Pereira and Ferrin were victorious in their No. 1 and 2 singles matches. Pereira took down UALR's German Perez 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, while Ferrin won convincingly over the Trojans' Rain Roigas 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Pereira has now won nine of his last 10 matches, while Ferrin has won eight of his last nine.
The victory extended UNF's non-conference winning streak to four matches.
The Ospreys will wrap up the Shocker Invitational with a dual at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday against 75th- ranked Wichita State.
