Vanessa Sanchez tallies singles victory for UNF
MOBILE, Ala. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team put forth a spirited effort against 55th-ranked South Alabama on Friday afternoon but came up short, losing 5-2 in a non-conference matchup at USA's Lubel Memorial Courts.
Vanessa Sanchez posted the only singles victory for the Lady Ospreys (1-2), taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over Erica Krisan at the No. 3 position. UNF's Victoria Krook won by forfeit at the No. 6 position, when the Lady Jaguars (2-0) failed to fill that spot in the lineup. The win will not count toward Krook's individual won- loss total.
In doubles, the Lady Ospreys also earned a forfeit victory at the No. 3 position when the Lady Jaguars failed to fill the slot. USA took care of business at the top two doubles spots, however, to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.
In the most hotly contested singles match of the day, UNF's Maria Melihova lost at the No. 4 position after winning the first set, forcing the Lady Jaguars' Katie Welch to rally for the victory -- 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
UNF will travel to Troy, Ala., on Saturday afternoon to face Troy, their second Sun Belt Conference opponent in as many days. Match time is set for noon ET at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
