Lady Osprey Softball Weekly

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team will follow up its season-opening tournament with a stop in Birmingham, Ala., for the Samford Bulldog Bash this weekend.

The Lady Ospreys started the season with a 2-3 mark at the FAU Kick-off Classic last weekend. UNF highlighted the three-day event with wins against UMass and South Carolina, both of which were receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll.

Devyn Findley helped lead UNF to both of those wins with strong performances in the pitching circle. She finished the tournament 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against South Carolina before allowing a couple of hits and a pair of unearned runs. Findley made up for the miscues in the field behind her, however, driving home the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning.

This week UNF will trade the hot sun of South Florida for cooler temperatures and possible rain in Birmingham. This weekend's field features Troy, Louisville and host Samford. Troy is the only team UNF has met, splitting a pair of games with the Trojans two years ago at Troy.

Notables: After blasting a school record for home runs in a season last year, UNF did not have a home run on its opening weekend of play … head coach Sonya Wilmoth captured her 500^th career win in UNF's victory against South Carolina to close out the FAU Kick-off Classic … Devyn Findley earned both wins for UNF last week, striking out 25 batters, while allowing opposing hitters a .139 batting average against her … Findley also finished the weekend tied atop the list of hitting leaders with Kara Rutenbar, as both players hit .286 … UNF is 22-23 in tournament play on the NCAA Division I level.

Quoting Coach Wilmoth: “To come out of last weekend's tournament with a 2-3 record is satisfying. We proved we could play with some of the big-name opponents on this level. I hope that last weekend's performance will give us confidence heading into this weekend's tournament. We got great pitching last weekend, but I'm hoping we will hit a little better this weekend.”
