JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team took a short drive south - twice - over the weekend to open its 2008 dual season, after having its matches against Bethune-Cookman and South Florida postponed a day due to inclement weather.
Once underway on Sunday in Daytona, the Lady Ospreys knocked off Bethune-Cookman 7-0 and fell to 29th-ranked South Florida, 4-0. The UNF-USF match featured just singles play, with the first team to four wins declared the winner - and all other matches halted at that point.
Against BCC, UNF posted straight-set wins in all six singles matches - including 6-0, 6-0 scores by Maria Melihova at No. 3, Carolina Melo at No. 5 and Robin Rogers at No. 6. UNF's Vanessa Sanchez knocked off Monika Musilova at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, while UNF's Ina Durcakova upended Andrea Paez 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
