Ospreys fall to JU before crowd of 3,462 at UNF Arena
BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Chris Timberlake knew his 1,000th points would eventually come. The University of North Florida senior's only hope was that it would come in a win.
Timberlake scored 13 points, eclipsing the 1,000- point plateau with four points early in the game, as the Ospreys lost to cross-town rival Jacksonville University 67-56 on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena. Timberlake became only the fifth players in school history to reach the mark, the last being Donny Lotz in 2005.
"I guess I knew I would eventually get there," the Miami native said. "But wins are a lot more valuable than points. I would much rather my team have gotten the victory. It is what it is, and I am proud of the mark, but I wish we could have won."
Marcus Allen scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season in leading the Dolphins (9-8, 5-0 A-Sun). Allen connected on 6-of-9 shots, including just his fifth 3-point basket of the year on his first shot of the game.
UNF (1-16, 0-5) led in the first half and kept things close for 29 minutes, pulling to within three points at 42-39 with 11 minutes left in the game. Allen started a 14-4 Jacksonville run with a three-point play at that point, however, and guard Ben Smith finished the surge with another three-point play.
The spurt gave the Dolphins a 53-43 lead with just over four minutes remaining, and UNF could not get closer than nine points down the stretch.
JU hit 42 percent from the floor and was only 66 percent at the foul line, but the Dolphins' strong defense limited North Florida to just 35 percent from the field and forced the Ospreys into 18 turnovers. UNF outrebounded JU 45-33 and forced the Dolphins into 17 turnovers.
Tom Hammonds led UNF with 17 points, while James Grimball added 14 rebounds and three blocks. Smith scored 14 points for JU.
UNF will take six days off before returning to action next Friday at home against A-Sun newcomers USC Upstate at UNF Arena. Tipoff for the matchup of former Division II Peach Belt Conference rivals is set for 7 p.m.
