Ospreys welcome A-Sun newcomer, former Peach Belt rival
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's basketball team will welcome a familiar old friend to UNF Arena on Friday night - and hope that their old pals will offer up a victory.
Former Peach Belt Conference foe USC Upstate is in its first season of the four-year Division I reclassification process and its first season of membership in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Spartans have enjoyed an up-and-down year - knocking off Conference USA opponent SMU in non- conference action and later Gardner-Webb in A-Sun play - but also losing 16 games, just as UNF has.
Both squads will look to snap conference losing streaks in their first meeting since 2005.
Ospreys senior Chris Timberlake eclipsed the 1,000- point mark in his career last Saturday in UNF's 67-56 loss to Jacksonville. Junior Tom Hammonds continues to lead the Ospreys in scoring (13.8 points per game), which ranks 15th in the A-Sun. UNF's James Grimball ranks second in the A-Sun in blocks (1.71 bpg).
