UNF can't hold five-point lead in falling to former Peach Belt foe
BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - USC Upstate rallied from a five-point deficit over the final three minutes and got a game-winning basket and free throw from Jeremy Byrd with 17.7 seconds to play as the Spartans knocked off North Florida 53-52 in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action on Friday night.
Eddie Payne scored 18 points for USC Upstate (4-16, 2-4 A-Sun), while Byrd finished with 11. James Grimball led UNF (1-17, 0-6 A-Sun) - collecting 11 points and 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and the 12th of his career.
Homestanding UNF took a 48-43 lead on a pair of Grimball free throws with 4:42 to play and held that same lead with 2:29 remaining when the Spartans began their climb back. Upstate outscored the Ospreys 10-4 over the final three minutes to claim the win in a game between former Division II Peach Belt Conference foes.
"It was a hard-fought basketball game, and a tough game," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "We simply didn't execute over the final 10 minutes. That was the difference. We had three assists and 12 turnovers in the second half running the same offense we ran in the first half. You can't do that and win basketball games."
Rashawn Brailsford's 3-pointer sliced the deficit to 48- 46, and a pair of Luke Payne free throws tied the game at 48 with 2:05 to play. UNF regained the lead after that on a Stan Januska 3-pointer but couldn't hold it. Grimball missed one of his two free throws with 25 seconds left to make the score 52-50, and Payne took the inbounds and drove to the basket to tie the game with 17 seconds to go - and was fouled by Grimball on the play, leading to the go-ahead free throw.
Tom Hammonds missed a 10-footer with three seconds to play, and Upstate secured the rebound to cap the comeback. UNF led 29-23 at halftime.
UNF shot just 37 percent for the game and only 31 percent from 3-point range (4-of-13) and committed 19 turnovers. Upstate converted those into 23 points, outscoring UNF 23-4 off miscues in the game. The Ospreys won the rebounding battle, 41-34. Upstate shot 35 percent.
Hammonds led UNF in scoring with 15 points, while Januska added 14.
The Ospreys will face a short turnaround this weekend, traveling to Johnson City, Tenn., to face East Tennessee State on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast locally on WBOB- AM 1320 and streamed live via the World Wide Web at ASUN.TV.
